I'm going through all the interesting demographic data in the exit poll in the Polls etc thread now, but here's one detail that's nice enough to crosspost here:

nimh wrote:
  • Huge differences between young and old - among whites - but not among blacks

    <snip>

    Young whites go for Obama

Among whites, the age difference is stark!

Among whites aged over 60, Clinton and Edwards each get some 40%; Obama gets just 15%. In the two age groups between 30-60, Clinton and Edwards both get 35-40%, while Obama gets 25% in each.

But among those aged 18-29, Obama wins half of the vote! Clinton is at 28%, Edwards at 20%.
In a state like South Carolina, Obama may not quite be the postracial candidate - getting just a quarter of the white vote even as he romps home overall. I know that some here dont agree, but this confirms my suspicions, based on other polls, that Obama faces a problem in the South. But this particular data point seems to suggest that what we are seeing is a postracial generation! In South Carolina too, young whites have no hesitations voting for Obama en masse - isnt that a hopeful sign!

No, no...!

<laughs>

The question was really just a comment on how CNN's results page looked like....

Results are finally starting to be posted on the SC election site:

Biden .1%
Clinton 25.8%
Dodd .1%
Edwards 8.3%
Gravel 0
Kucinich .1%
Obama 65.3%
Richardson .2%

That's just a very small percentage of one county reporting.

Unfortunately this site doesn't give the percentage of total precincts reporting so it is difficult to get an early overview.

Biden .1%
Clinton 26.8%
Dodd .0%
Edwards 25.8%
Gravel 0
Kucinich .1%
Obama 46.9%
Richardson .2%

Biden .1%
Clinton 25.8%
Dodd .1%
Edwards 22.1%
Gravel 0
Kucinich .1%
Obama 51.5%
Richardson .2%

I don't think it's that big.

50% of the primary voters were black. They overwhelmingly went for Obama. Did you expect a different result? Hillary didn't, she left SC mid week for other states.

What is bigger is the declining % of white voter support that Obama is getting. It's going down in every contest.

It seems like race is a bigger factor than anybody would like to admit (black or white).

Looking at the exit polls Posted: Saturday, January 26, 2008 7:03 PM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: 2008, Primaries
From MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell and Adam Verdugo

The South Carolina Democratic primary has been a bitter, hard-fought contest with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama taking jabs at each other in Monday's televised debate. In the exit polls, we asked voters in this primary if the candidates were attacking each other unfairly. Fifty-six percent of those voting so far think Obama attacked Clinton unfairly, and while that is a high number, more people thought Clinton unfairly attacked Obama -- 70%.

The Clintons have been accused of playing the race card in this contest. We do see some potential fallout for the Clintons in the African-American community: 74% of African-American voters think that Clinton unfairly attacked Obama. But when we look at the same question among white voters, a comparable number thought Clinton unfairly attacked Obama -- 68%.

Also worth mentioning, a majority of the voters -- 56% -- said that Bill Clinton's campaigning was important to their vote today.

True, which is promising for our nation (at least the apparent color-blindness).

It's too bad that our generation of younger voters is so much smaller relative to the overall number of voters.

89 percent reporting, 54% Obama and 27% Clinton... I'm starting to feel a little celebratory.

I have to say though, Iowa was a WOW!!! and this is a WHEW!! The exit poll data makes it wowier. And the margin!

Larger then it has been in the past.

This is a big thing. Hillary done got doubled up on. That's bad. And let's not forget that she spent a ton of money on this state, it isn't as if she wasn't on the ballot at all.

In fact - Obama has gotten the same percentage of votes as Hillary did in MI, and his name wasn't even on the ballot there!

Percentage-wise, the chances of any Dem winning by the end of Super Tuesday is extremely slim. Keeping that in mind, Obama is doing great!

Yeah, Clinton left mid week. But let's not get TOO short-memoried here. Six months ago she was polling with about double his support AMONG BLACKS. Iowa made Black people rethink his chances, and realign their support. So this IS BIG, if for nothing else but because of the people who will again rethink what he is capable of in this election.

Lynn --
We've just won a big victory in South Carolina.
After four great contests in every corner of this country, and another record turnout today, we have the most votes, the most delegates, and the most diverse coalition of Americans we've seen in a long, long time.
You'll have a chance to make your voice heard next Tuesday, February 5th -- and I am counting on you.
I'll be heading down shortly to thank our supporters in South Carolina.
If you're reading this tonight, I hope you'll tune in at home so I can thank you, too.

Well, Obama obviously won...but it's not like Clinton is just going to walk away after SC.

Looking forward to Super Tuesday; I'm thinking that you all will be singing a diferent tune then.

He led his speech with this line.

He is doing a great job highlighting the Clinton's divisive tactics in his speech without specifically naming her.
