Wounded Warriors taxed by ObamaCare for prosthetic, medical devices

Jim Kouri - July 4, 2010

Purple Heart heroes will be taxed on their artificial limbs and devices that help them survive.

"You will not see your taxes increased a single dime." - President Barack Obama

"[W]e have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy." - Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

As the nation celebrates Independence Day with parades and barbecues, America's veterans face a new tax on prosthetic limbs and other vital medical devices.

The health care overhaul passed by Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama earlier this year contains a new tax on medical devices such as prosthetic limbs, pacemakers, and wheelchairs. This tax, which its proponents claim will raise $20 billion over the next ten years, contains no exemption for the nation's 22 million veterans. In fact, Senate Democrats specifically refused to exempt veterans from the tax., according to officials from the non-partisan, public interest group Americans for Tax Reform.

"Did Americans forget President Obama promising that Americans making less than $250,000.00 per year would not see their taxes go up one cent? Once again a politician is caught lying to the voters," said political strategist Mike Baker.

On March 24 2010, Senate Democrats rejected an amendment offered by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) to the healthcare bill. This amendment (SA 3644) would have prevented the medical device tax from hitting veterans covered by the Veterans Healthcare Program or TRICARE for Life.

This amendment was rejected by a vote of 44-54. All but five Democrat senators voted in favor of retaining the tax for veterans.

The medical device tax was one of over twenty new or higher taxes in President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul. This permanent new tax is already being collected by the federal government.

"On March 24, Senate Democrats had the opportunity to exempt our veterans from Obamacare's new tax on medical devices such as prosthetic limbs. But 54 Democrats voted against the measure. They chose to side with the tax-and-spend crowd in Washington over our wounded warriors," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.

"This is one of the many reasons Harry Reid and the Democrats did not want Americans to read the 2,500 page health care bill before it was passed," Norquist added.

In addition to those who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Department of Veterans Affairs reports the following number of veterans from America's wars:

World War II: 2,079,000
Korean War: 2,507,000
Vietnam War: 7,569,000
Desert Shield/Storm: 2,254,000

The following senators voted FOR the tax:

@ican711nm,
Mystery man told you politely that you are a fool. Apologize to him. BTW, if mystery summarized an article for me, I would accept his version. If you were to summarize an article, I would have to read it. You see, ican, mystery man is smarter than you and reads better than you do. He is a trustworthy witness, a reliable narrator. You are neither trustworthy nor reliable.

No, I do noth believe mm called ican a fool, so I think you are the one that should apologize. I believe conservatives are individuals, and as individuals we often disagree on some points, even though we have general agreement overall.

I respect both mysteryman's and ican's opinions as posted, and I believe both to be highly intelligent, reasonable, dedicated, and patriotic people that understand what this country is and what it should be. I am sorry to say that I have no similar belief about you, pom, I think you are a highly misguided liberal with deeply held prejudices and radical ideas. Frankly, I resent what you and your ilk are attempting to do to this beloved country. I have no malice toward you, but just be aware that I will actively oppose you and like minded leftists in the political arena, to try to defeat what you are attempting to do in destroying the country.

pom, I am being very frank with you, but some things I hold too dear to be compromised, glossed over, and ignored.

A blue-and-white Israeli flag hung from Blair House. Across Pennsylvania Avenue, the Stars and Stripes was in its usual place atop the White House. But to capture the real significance of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's visit with President Obama, White House officials might have instead flown the white flag of surrender.

Four months ago, the Obama administration made a politically perilous decision to condemn Israel over a controversial new settlement. The Israel lobby reared up, Netanyahu denounced the administration's actions, Republican leaders sided with Netanyahu, and Democrats ran for cover.

So on Tuesday, Obama, routed and humiliated by his Israeli counterpart, invited Netanyahu back to the White House for what might be called the Oil of Olay Summit: It was all about saving face.

Israel is right no matter what they do and Obama panders like a woman.....Just another normal day, no news here....

edit: AND the GOP does not support their President and the DEMS prove to be ball-less....again, situation normal.

@okie,
For people to participate in a discussion, they have to agree to the meanings of terms. Your terms -- as you have stated -- are your own. Therefore, no one can discuss anything with you.

So, you think think only conservatives are individuals? Interesting and egotistical statement.
Quote:
I believe conservatives are individuals

I do not believe most conservatives are individuals because they exhibit nothing but conformity. You decried my statement that competition is gone from American business. Gungasnake only wants to read analysis and definitions supplied by right wing sources. David thinks anything he might interpret as defying the Constitution is deviance yet he seems to approve of Constitutional amendments. All sounds pretty lock step to me.

You also wrote:

But, mysteryman wrote this on this thread and addressed to ican:
Quote:
Am I a conservative? Yes, I am.
However, I dont believe that you are, because of what you keep posting.
If you are, you are not the same type of conservative that I am, and I want no part of whatever "conservatism" that you believe.

That does not sound like "general agreement overall."

I think that not all the liberal action in the world can help save this country from the damage the right has done to it. The AMerican right is built on racism, hatred, limited access to goods for the many, destruction of the environment, limited access to education, false science.

And this guy wants to be a democrat Senator?...

http://politicalwire.com/archives/2010/07/07/alvin_greenes_jobs_plan.html

Quote:
Alvin Greene's Jobs Plan
In an interview with The Guardian, South Carolina U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene (D) discussed his "big idea" to create jobs in his state.

Said Greene: "Another thing we can do for jobs is make toys of me, especially for the holidays. Little dolls. Me. Like maybe little action dolls. Me in an army uniform, air force uniform, and me in my suit. They can make toys of me and my vehicle, especially for the holidays and Christmas for the kids. That's something that would create jobs. So you see I think out of the box like that. It's not something a typical person would bring up. That's something that could happen, that makes sense. It's not a joke."

Please tell me that the dem party isnt so stupid as to actually support this guy!!!

@mysteryman,
Ad hominem arguments are still ad hominem arguments.

I can find idiot tea baggers.
I can find idiot Republicans.
I can find idiot independents.
I can find idiot Democrats.

It says nothing about the movement/organization itself that there are idiots who belong to it.

@mysteryman,
MM: I don't know how closely you are following the various elections. I am a bit of a political junkie.
Here is the back story of Alvin Greene in South Carolina. Some find it quite amusing. Others, including me, find it quite sad.
He is homeless, jobless and perhaps mentally impaired. It is not at all clear where he got the thousands of dollars necessary to file for the (Democrat) primary. SC has open primaries, meaning that any registered voter, Dem or Repub, can vote. The conspiracy theorists contend that someone put up the money and then non-Dems came out and voted for him. Turnout was, like in many primaries, very low.
The state Dem party is not supporting him and the media, for the most part, is not giving the poor guy with a lot of problems much coverage.

You continue to accuse the right of exactly what you on the left are guilty of. Since 1913 the left has been engaged in the transformation of our country into a dictatorship, and all the while it attempts to camouflage that by accusing the right of doing it instead.

The left has been guilty of increasingly lying and stealing and corrupting our country to satisfy its greed for power..

Do you boycott companies who are polluters?

plainoldme wrote:

ican's answers are in italics.

No where, no how!

How many times did you march with MLK?

Twice!

How much recycling do you do?

Daily, cans, bottles, papers, oil, etc.

To what temperature is your thermostat set?

79 degrees F.

Do you bring your own bag when you shop?

We bring four green cloth bags when we shop.

Do you boycott companies who are polluters?

Yes, those I know are polluters.

Now, what have your questions got to do with the fact that the statists (i.e., alleged capitalists) and socialists (i.e., alleged humanitarians ) in our society are crippling it?

The term "dichotomy" is being extra nice. Perhaps "hypocrite" would be a more accurate term?
