It was stupid, but I wish (and I know its not gonna happen) the media didn't make such a BIGFRIKKINDEAL out of things like this.

Shocked Wow. That's pretty idiotic. Scratch Biden off the list of potential contenders.

Didn't some politician once give the off hand compliment of "articulate" to Colin Powell? Well maybe it's not all bad, no one ever used the word "articulate" to describe Bush.

Hmm, "articulate" by itself wouldnt be a problem for me - Obama is exceptionally articulate.

Thats like - who was it, when was it - when some liberal politician or pundit complimented a 12- or 14-year old black boy as "very articulate", which some on the right tried to spin as racist condescension - I didnt get that. I mean, it was a kid, it was a logical compliment.

But this - the whole thing? "The first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy [..] I mean, that's a storybook, man"?

It's a storybook tale to find a bright, "clean and nice-looking" African-American (making his way up, is what we'll benevolently assume he meant, at least)? Yikes.

Yeah, it's fine at "articulate," gets a bit eek at "bright", but then "clean" just sends it over into the abyss.

Oops.

Overall I agree nimh, but I can't think of any American white politician ever calling another white politician articulate. They might say "he sure can give a speech", but for some reason the word articulate is used as if it's a surprise.
The "clean and nice looking" thing is just creepy, maybe you would describe your teenage daughter's boyfriend like that, but not an adult professional man.

I'd say "first" is what puts him in the recycle bin. And he's full of it from the get-go. Al Sharpton is all of the above.

Actually, BPB chose a close facsimile to the dreaded articulate comment, imo.

I am so incredibly tired of white people calling black people "articulate." It is OBVIOUSLY spoken from a position of latent superiority. I fully believe Biden is comfortable with his views on race and didn't mean any harm. Things like this ooze out when you aren't paying attention. (From those whose views require that they pay attention....)

I hate that word.

I think by clean--he meant "clean record."

I hope this doesn't hang onto Biden. He's really improved as a human being since the last time he ran and has some bold opinions that break outside the pack.

We're going to be seeing a lot of this stuff during the campaign, imo. I actually think the dialogue will improve race relationships--as long as people are allowed to make mistakes to learn from. Biden's learning one right now. The other campaigns are probably looking at this closely. I just hope PC doesn't shut down useful dialogue ...

The storybook thing got my attention more than the other word choices. Did he mean "only possible in a fantasy" <---really bad or "the stuff of happily ever after endings"<--good. I tend to think he meant the latter.

I'd like to hear his answer--but he's had time to do boiler room damage control with his war room by now.

What do you think of blacks being deemed as "articulate," snood....anybody...? Can we write the DOJ?? Stop the madness!!! Laughing

Do you mean Biden's answer to the criticism, or Obama's answer to the uproar? If the latter, Obama just said he was sure Biden didn't mean anything by it, but that he was "historically inaccurate" about him being the "first" - and he named Jackson, Chisolm, Mosely-Braun, and Sharpton as previous black presidential hopefuls...

Maybe not Shirley Chisolm... I don't remember that much about her.

I subtract her from that afore-adjudged group of average (dirty) politicians.

A2K is bobbling to the left tonight. I try to add comments and they hang in outer space for twenty minutes....

Snood. What is your "Oh, Lash" about? Almost all politicians drag some kind of crap around on the campaign trail. That group is notorious--except for Chisolm. Do you deny it? 98% of politicians (my guess) are dirty in some way.

I think my "Oh Lash" was because you were taking, IMHO, a tangent that was definitively non-productive and negative.

I was addressing exactly why Biden's (oddly worded) praise of Obama did NOT include the group you mentioned. The biggest thing Obama has going isn't the "articulate"--yes, I think the entire group is articulate. I think everyone who can speak intelligible sentences is articulate...

I think they were NOT "clean" and that is Obama's (currently) biggest plus.

Giving direct, honest and applicable answers should always be viewed as productive. I didn't know we were restricted ourselves to answers you deem as "positive." You miss a lot of information that way... Very Happy
