Our friend Robert George of the New York Post, writing for an NBC News Web site, makes an important point about President Obama's lack of comportment in the aftermath of the Fort Hood massacre:

Quote:
After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective.

But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a "shout-out" to "Dr. Joe Medicine Crow--that Congressional Medal of Honor winner." Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him?

Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter.

Video is here. It's of a piece with Obama's obsessive focus on health care at a time when voters are worried about unemployment: the latest evidence that the president's vaunted "cool" under pressure reflects indifference, not mastery.

@Finn dAbuzz,
Damn, you guys are a bunch of petty morons. The fact that Obama had lead-in remarks to his comments on the shooting is immaterial.

Is it possible for you to find something less material than this to complain about? I doubt it. Sad what the right-wing punditry has been reduced to.

Well, someone needs to make tacky political points off of this tragedy, so why not Finn?

I remember a time, not too long ago, when I defended the President and a bunch of people would criticize him every day. Blowing every little thing he did out of proportion and trying their very best to show what a bad guy he was. Now, the tables have turned and those that would attack the President daily are now defending, with the very same vigor and almost the same vocabulary, a President that has made many mistakes so far, accomplished very little and yet he is staunchly held up to the lowest possible standards by those that expected the very best from the last President.

@McGentrix,
I'd say that the biggest difference, is that Obama is a smart guy who is dealing with a Congress which resists his plans, whereas Bush was a ******* idiot who had 6 years of a totally compliant Congress - and he still didn't manage to get **** done. The criticism of Bush was rather more substantial than that you've managed to drag up for Obama.

Well, other than prosecuting useless wars, I really wouldn't agree with that. His domestic agenda was a flop.

Which suggests okie's posts didn't impress you and that what he said in them is disqualified on the grounds that you are political opponents.

There was no politics in his posts apart from his derogatory reference to communism. So unless you're a communist I don't see why you couldn't have agreed with me. They were interesting, well written and obviously honest posts.

The fact is that if this was a fanatical guy carrying around a Bible, or somebody that ranted about Islam, or ranted about abortion, or something along those lines, I have a good idea about what we would be reading in the news today. It would be something along the lines of the fanaticism of the right, of Christianity, and maybe they would even connect it to people like Glenn Beck or Limbaugh, and then be proposing ideas about why and how they should be silenced for the good of the country. Clinton made noises about that after the Oklahoma City bombing. We also know that if it had been something like that, Christians and conservatives would roundly be condemning that person for being nuts as he is, but strangely all we hear today from the left side of the aisle and from the world of Islam is that we should not rush to judgement, and comments about what might have driven this man to do what he did. There will be a concerted effort to find some justification for what he did. Oddly, we even heard that about Osama Bin Laden and the 9/11 perpetrators, fact is Obama's own religious and political mentor, Jeremiah Wright said "the chickens have come home to roost." Who knows, he may think the same thing about this guy as well? It would fit his mindset, and those who think like he does.

@cicerone imposter,
I don't think it's my job to justify the man's personal feelings. He was just giving a personal account of his experiences.

Sometimes, like when teenyboone posts, you give her many 'thank you's' for sharing her personal experiences. And she's more off the rails than okie is. She thinks white people, including Bill Clinton, are behind a big plot to keep black people addicted to drugs. THAT is way out there.

@maporsche,
maporsche, thanks for the defense, and to others as well for the defense, but poor ci has pretty much gone so far off on a tangent here of ridiculing others that his credibility is almost gone. My opinion of course, but my life is easier after placing him on ignore, and if others did the same, perhaps he would wake up? I actually think ci is a nice enough guy, but somehow he finds a weird degree of enjoyment from ridiculing others that do not agree with him.
