@edgarblythe,
Ooh. australo-american usage difference. I think we say 'on heat' not 'in heat'

Hi guys,
I realize this thread is more of a 'fun and novelty stuff about cats' thread than anything, but I wanted to ask a 'cat' question to a bunch of cat people.
I just read an article about cats that made me want to ask. One thing the article said was"cat behavior is not random".
My cat Joe is 12 years old just like his brother George. I've had them since they were about 8 months.
Ever since Joe has been with me, he's got this one thing he does out of the blue sometimes that I've never been able to figure out, and sometimes even after all this time it still gives me a little start.

He will utter this deep, guttural, anguished -sounding cry, tuck his tail down low to the ground and light out running! Sometimes it's just one pass from one end of the house to the other. Sometimes he'll make several passes, making that scary sound. It always ends with him crying plaintively and looking at me as if he's pleading for me to do something - I don't know what.

He will also regularly launch into long crying jags - endless meows with no apparent cause - not hungry, not in pain, had treats, had catnip, had play opportunities...

His brother, who is nearly identical - from the same litter... When all this is going on, is usually curled up looking on disinterestedly - or asleep.

I've never been able to figure this out. Both the boys are in good health and up to date with the vet. This behavior has always baffled me.

Any ideas out there?

@snood,
Sorry, but no. The reasonless charging about for no apparent reason is typical cat behavior in my experience. The vocal effects are not typical of any cat that has lived with me. I am reassured that his brother doesn't seem disturbed.

This is what the thread used to be about. Our cats.

@snood,
What breed is he? I used to own a Burmese cat who made some similar - and very strange - noises.

Just what I was saying the other day. Question and contributions about cats, by cat people.

Snood - good to see you, btw.

If the cat is healthy - and, after this episode, he seems fine, then I'd put it down to "one of those things cats do to un-nerve us"!

The Poss-cat occasionally does things like this, but without the running, because he's too old. He'll sit and cry piteously for no apparent reason - and then just settle down.

Perhaps it's just his particular attention-seeking behaviour. "Look at ME!!"

@snood,
My Sebastian cries in an anguished way when, I think, he wants stimulation and will run about like a mad thing if he doesn't get it.....but you have offered your cat play. He generally wants very intense interactive play at that point.....like playing with him in his crinkly tunnel, or in one of his boxes.

Doesn't seem to fit with your fella though.

@snood,
Our Ragdoll Sam does this pretty regularly - over time I've associated with it preceding a visit to the litter tray. Like he has to shake it out. Both our cats are always inside, so length of the house runs are the max they can do.
