What are the chances of a 3rd generation person having a downs syndrome child?
Ive doen some research, it seems its not hereditery, just chance or increased chance if the mother is old when having a baby.
What do you mean by "a 3rd generation person"?
You seem to mean a person with Down Syndrome who is the child and grandchild of persons with Down Syndrome?
Sorry, I mean a friend found out her aunt who died young had DS.
So, oh, it wouldnt be third generation!
Grandparents-no DS, they had 2 kids,1child DS(died young), their second child no DS.
The second childs children have no DS.
Is their any higher risk of the children having DS children of their own in the future or does it just occur randomly?
Hope that makes sense.
Hey mat,
In the vast majority of cases, DS is not hereditary. Your friend can relax bc her chances are increased for having a child with DS by only a fraction of a percentage! Almost nothing.
The biggest factor that increases your chances of having a child with Down Syndrome is age. The older you get, the higher the risk.
Check out this link for more info, ifn ya like. I don't want to explain a whole blob about DS if you really just want to know that simple q!

Thanks.
Research has put my mind at rest.
My friend isnt sure if she even wants kids, if she does it wont be for a few years, she is in her 30's now, so its an added dilemma.
I don't know your position on abortion, but they have a new test that can detect DS in the first trimester.
Yeah I saw that there are tests that can be done pre pregnancy and during pregnancy.
I'd like to add that very young mothers are also at risk of having a Downs' baby.
