Hi everybody. This is my first post on the boards and I must say this is a pretty cool site. Could use a little help though. I have a debate tomorrow in History class and I have to argue against the following statement:

-The US was more united than ever after the fall of Yorktown.

I have to come up with some good points to argue this statement against the other team who is supporting it. If anybody could help me, it would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

So what's your opinion on the question? Maybe we can help you strengthen your existing ideas.

Well, I figured that all the other team had to say was "they took Yorktown and won the war". However, The topic leaves plenty of room to talk about how America was not united before or after the war was over. I really only thought of two points that I can use in my favour:

1. I said that the American revolution was over. But as George Washington knew, that was the easy part. Now came the task of building a new nation, of moulding 13 separate former colonies into a truly United States of America.

2. Even though it is a well known fact that Benedict Arnold was one of Americas greatest traitors, I argue differently(even though I know he was a traitor). I said that Arnold, being one of the most trusted military officers, was not content with his life for the following reasons:
-his fathers buisness had fallen on hard times and failed due to increasing and ridiculous British taxes
-when he became govenor, he spent a lot of money on himself (which I believed he earned) and was forced to resign.

In closing ,I argue that the person who you think is the villan is really the victim. he did his country a great service and was not rewarded. He did no wrong in wanting a little happiness and protection after giving so much to his country. I close the argument by asking if these are the actions of a man who is UNITED with his country?

I think another thing to consider is that the war tore apart many communities. A Whig and a Tory could be living side by side on adjoining farms. People spied on each other, neighbor turned in neighbor for bounty. Now the new government had to unite everyone in order to create a lasting peace.
