Can you help my chess team??

We'd like our motto to read, in Latin: "Always check, it might be mate.". Here "check" is meant in the chess sense, but keeping it ambiguous (i.e., also meaning inspect or test for accuracy) would be really nice. The "mate" bit has to be the chess sense.
