At some point in the next 6 months, I'll be buying a new computer. Mine is cobbled together and badly outdated (not to mention disorganized). Everyone keeps suggesting a notebook. I would rather have a table top. I need something that has all the basic current software, but also hardware to play RPG games. I'm pining for Oblivion (the next Elder Scrools game) which needs some serious hardware (listed below). In order to get a laptop outfitted to play Oblivion, I'd need to spend well over $1k. I could buy a desktop PC that would work for gaming for maybe $7-800.00.
Does anyone have any brands or stores to recommend?
Is there a way to get a super-cheap laptop just for my school work (I will be taking classes away from home)?
Here are the recommended Oblivion specs:
3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
ATI X800 series, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card
1 GB system RAM
And the minimum specs:
Windows XP (which I don't have)
512 MB system RAM
2 Ghz intel P 4 processor
128 MD (?) Direct 3D compatible video card and DirectX9.0 compatible driver
8x DVD-ROM drive
4.6 GB free hard disk space
DirectX 9.0c (comes with game)
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
I feel sorry for you, littlek. No one has answered your post yet. I will sit here with you until someone comes along.
And, might I recommend a Dell?
Hey, Gus, thanks...
I keep asking about Dell computers and I keep getting grimaces.
Well, my people tell me Dell.
You recognize this guy, littlek? His name is Professor Wilber L. Scoville. In 1912 he developed a method to measure the heat level of chile peppers. The test is named after him, the "Scoville Organoleptic Test".
I just thought you'd like to know.
That's nice. Thanks again.
You are very welcome. I wonder when someone will come along to answer your computer question and rescue me from this small-talk prison. I'm not very good at this stuff.
So, how is the weather in Boston?
I've got a recent Dell desktop that you can have cheap.
Do you like the color blue ? That's what it does best.
I have heard good things about e-Machines, and they seem to be pretty affordable.
And your astrological sign is?
How about Acers? I've heard some good things about them.
And thanks, LionTamer, for participating in Littlek's thread.
Gus, I'm no good at small talk either. Sorry, I seem to have left you here talking to yourself while I was off looking into the reason for the white band around Lake Mead....
Acer seems cheap-ish.
Did you acknowledge LionTamer, littlek? That would seem appropriate.
Oopsie - see, I'm bad at this.
Thanks for stopping by LionTamer. I don't think I'll be getting a Dell. e-machine, you say?
Yes, littlek.
I think you can find them at best buy or circuit city.
The cool thing about owning a Dell is you get to talk to people in India on a weekly basis.
Lion - I'd be happy to give that up for a better price tag and reliablity, thankyouverymuch.

I have an Acer 1694 it's ******* GREAT. The specs are even better than the 1690 reviewed here

Chumly - good news, great review.....
As to the warranty on mine. It fell off the bed and the internal ac adapter connection broke off inside. It was totally my fault and this could have easily happened to any other laptop, I know I have had my share of Toshiba's and IBM's etc.
ACER paid for the everything, including shipping both ways, via FedEx, and replaced the entire motherboard all within a few days. It does not get better than that!
when Urs and Rainer were visiting here last summer, Rainer had bought a Acer lap top for his travel puter. He really seemed to like it.
