We rightly would first want to know how many Americans can actually read, how many Americans actually do read, and what Americans are actually reading, before flying off into speculations as to whether Americans believe what they read.

I believe most people read it to determine the stupidity of the source coming up with such drivel.

I like this article:

"Quail Grateful to Harry Whittington for Taking Dick Cheney's Shot - February 16th 2006

Chuck, a quail from Texas, has expressed his gratitude to 78 year old lawyer Harry Whittington for intercepting a shot fired at him by Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney. The quail, who has lived most of his life at the ranch where the incident took place, escaped unscathed – whereas hero Harry Whittington was hospitalised, suffering pellet wounds to the cheek, neck and chest.

“I have to say I thought that was it,” Chuck recounted, “When Dick Cheney swung around and got me in his sights I thought my days of living were over. I saw the glint in the Vice President's eye as his finger tightened on the trigger – I was certain I was going to die.

“The last thing I expected was for Harry Whittington to intercept the shot – I mean, he'd only shot dead 3 of my friends only 20 minutes ago. If anything I would have expected him to have unloaded an Uzi into my bloody corpse.”

Whilst the exact details of the incident are still unknown, it is believed that Dick Cheney inadvertently hit his friend whilst trying to shoot Chuck. It is generally accepted by all concerned that the Vice President was not intending to shoot Harry Whittington as no charges have yet been brought against him..........."

Yeah, I just read that one, too! Funny! And I did like the "37% of Americans Believe Jack Bauer is Real" one... especially that part:

Quote:
Government spokespeople reported that they were shocked at how safe Americans felt:

"It kinda shocked us," Chuck Hankman reported, "I mean, we were busy looking into scrapping the Green and Blue terror alert levels. We're never going to use them as its never going to get that safe."

Most people who watch the news on TV or read opinion pieces know that one of the major rules in journalism is--"If it bleeds, it leads". That is why, for example, despite the fact that there have been very few internecine killings in the Kurdish area up north in Iraq or in the Shiite areas down in the south around Basra, the unthinking reader views the carnage in and around Baghdad as represenatational of all of Iraq.

Of course, it is not.

It would be as if our newspapers attempted to make the carnage which abounds in LA's Watts or Chicago's Englewood the standard for all of our cities.

It is amazing that the media has such absolute power to idealize, or on the other hand, demonize. President John Kennedy is now known to be a whoremonger and a liar on the subject of the missle crisis---but not when he was in office--the media decided that his surface glamorous persona was worth far more to them.
