Boomer, you have nothing to be anxious about!
You got guts though...it takes a lot ot post a pic of yourself.

I can tell you that you won't see me posting a picture of myself in a bathing suit...ever. I don't want you all to gag and die.

Hey boomer,

Do you still use film for your photos or have you switched to digital?

My film cameras are out and ready for action but I've really gone completely over to the dark side.

My little go everywhere pocket camera that used film bit the dust this summer and Mr. B replaced it at Christmas with a little pocket digital that can, among a million other things, shoot underwater.

Underwater is cool.

How do you feel about digital image quality compared to regular film?

I think the picture quality is great.

I have all my photos printed at a photo lab, on photo paper, using photo processing and that makes a HUGE difference in the quality. I think a lot of people print them on their home printers and those suck.

Ink on paper, I don't care how good the printer, will never (well, maybe someday) compare to a real print. The silver in the paper makes such a big difference.

That would be perfect for St. Patrick's Day dj - great colors.

That swimming pool picture is priceless, boomer. What a splendid idea.

Ahhhh djjd - I have spring fever so bad and that didn't help one bit. I would like to hang that on my desk.

<sigh>

Thank you CJane. I like that photo a lot. When I saw it I knew that I had to use it as part of my biography even though I still feel a bit vomity about posting a photo of me in a swimsuit.

I must say that everyone has made me feel a bit more comfortable about exposing myself though. For that, I am so grateful.

Is this just specialist labs or anywhere Boomerang? (the proper photographic paper for the prints) - I'd just assumed that they were simply done on better quality inkjets and didn't realise the prints were/could be 'proper' ones on proper photographic paper.

I can only speak for my lab - I use a local shop. They have a professional division and a consumer division.

This is from their FAQ

Quote:

Photo Quality:

What technology do you use for printing? back to top
We use the latest photographic print technology for printing on traditional photographic paper(silver halide), resulting in long lasting prints that at least match (and usually beat) the quality of traditional prints from film.

How long will my pictures last? back to top
Because we use traditional photographic paper, our prints will last decades with no noticeable fading. Unlike inkjet prints, which are printed on the surface of the paper, our prints are on traditional photographic paper which means not only a longer print life, but also a better richer print.

When looking for a lab I would look for something just like that.

The lab I use will ship anywhere but I'm afraid postage to England might make it a bit cost prohibitive.

Still, at the consumer division an 8x10 print is only $2.00 and the quality is very similar to the professional division.

Also from their site....

Quote:

Color Analyzed:
Every image that we print gets color analyzed by the best operators in the industry. They are corrected for color, density, contrast, gamma, saturation, etc. This is done by human operators which gives far better results than the best computer algorithms.

Twice Inspected:
After printing, all orders are then hand inspected for quality and accuracy, only then are they signed and mailed back to you.

Kodak Paper:
We use Kodak paper for all our printing. Matte (E surface) is printed on Kodak Edge. Glossy (F surface) is printed on Kodak Royal. Metallic (F surface) is printed on Kodak Endura.

Guaranteed:
We back all orders with a money back guarantee. We're happy when you're happy.

They really do guarantee their work too!

Those are a few things I would look for when chosing a lab.

I should also add -- by the time you calculate in the cost of ink, paper, wear and tear on your printer in addition to the number of "tries" it takes you to get a decent, balanced print -- you (or maybe I should say "I") come out way ahead financially.
