I can't find a dictionary definition for squash at all, except as a verb.

squash 1 (skw sh, skwôsh)
n.
1. Any of various tendril-bearing plants of the genus Cucurbita, having fleshy edible fruit with a leathery rind and unisexual flowers.
2. The fruit of any of these plants, eaten as a vegetable.

Ha. Sounds like the US began calling pumpkins squashes from the Narragansett.

Which is odd....cos the English have pumpkins, right?

Sturgis, I just checked. Fresh Direct has butternut squash. I think it was $1.49 a pound.

I appreciate that, thank you.

Nothing odd about it. The early English settlers in North America often adopted local native words in preference to words they brought over from the old country. (If I think of other examples, I'll let you know. Right now I'm too busy surfing to go looking into vocab books or sites.)

@Region Philbis,
My eyes will never be the same. I'm hearing strange sounds now...

...never mind it was just my neighbor breathing.

@Sturgis,
I didn't place an order. The next time I order something, I'd be glad to include a butternut squash.

@patiodog,
Only time I've seen jai alai was in Tijuana when I was seventeen, there with some friends (an oddly safe but adventurous experience for a complete dodo like me at the time, that whole trip). It was fun to watch - it was only later that I read that it can be quite a furious game - incredible ball speed.

I don't care how missed and glamorous you are, I cannot cohabit with a lie.

Straighten out and fly right if you wish to travel on Bun Airways.
