Let me explain, Thomas.

(I almost wrote: "Let me explain Thomas. But that would be beyond me.)

Cricket is a sport.
Baseball is a sport.
Sports are not important.
However, whether or not the Boston Red Sox go on to win the World Series, is a matter of life and death.

This seems to be true on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. I'm not sure if you know Diva from Abuzz. She's a real life friend of mine, a devoted New Yorker, and a passionate Yankee fan. Once upon a time, I quipped to her that if it wasn't for the American revolution, her favorite team would be the New York Tories, and they would be playing cricket, not baseball.

She was so not amused.

Heh ehehhee heheeheheeheheehehe!

I do not, in general, "get" the worship of various globular objects, whether with sticks of many shapes, nets, feet or heads....but I do note that it is a mania across the globe, and adherents of the various ball gods take a dim view of heresy.

Hm. Is that why Boston remained so small compared to New York? These decades of Death before 2005 must have taken a heavy toll in the city.
