The cellar can be used to store pretty much anything, whereas the basement is only used for bargains.

Region, When I was a kid (in NYC), the cellar was the cellar. Over time it became basement. Don't know when or why. The same thing applies to supper. When I was a kid, our evening meal was supper. Over time, supper became dinner.
I checked out basement and cellar in Webster's. Under cellar was the synonym basement. Under basement, no mention of cellar. Go figure.

In aristocratic circles, we just call it the dungeon.

We had dinner.
At least, until I was about 7. After that I'd fry up some of whatever meat was in the frig and make some pudding.

Cellar is a good, solid Anglo-Saxon word, cognate to the German Keller. I believe -- but I only believe -- that basement comes from the French and thus hasn't been in English useage very long -- only since 1066 or thereabouts.

Lord Ellpus on this thread?
Has he always been here, or is this a new event?
Do we have people who read this nonsense, and hardly ever say anything?
People we didn't know were there?
That's kind of embarrassing.......what HAVE I been saying?

It's all right, Bun Bun. I'm sure folks understand that even though you're cute and girlsih here that you're still a fearsome killing machine elsewhere on the board. (Like, you know, on the kitty cat threads.)

This has been building for some time. I figure where better than here to finally spill it.
Patiodog, the can of ham on the dog's head disturbs me no end. I know it's just a picture, but in my demented brain, the can makes the dog uncomfortable. I try not to look, but you know how it is when you try not to look at something. You're ineffably drawn to it.
Do I feel better now that I've gotten that off my chest? Nope.
