Did anyone else see "Good Night and Good Luck?"

Although I found it interesting and very well done, it never connected emotionallywith me. I had rather wished I had waited to see it on Cable/DVD.

One of the intersting subtexts was the chainsmoking on the part of most of the characters, many of whom died of lung cancer. As an actor, I often wondered how a non-smoking actor would fake smoking. Interstingly, Clooney only cast actors who smoked.

I also saw Transamerica (last July at the Frameline Festival at The Castro) Huffman plays "Bree" a conservative, uptight transsexual who is still struggling as a woman. In that vein, Huffman's portrayal was spot on. In reality, most transsexual women at Bree's stage are fairly much assimiliated as "normal" women.

Thanks for posting this, joe. It's an intriguing competition this year and now we basically have a third thread on "Brokeback," but it's not making a mountain out of a molehill. The film is great storytelling and very humanistic, warts and all. All the control freak purists (who undoubtedly are not pure themselves) are shaking in their symbolic cowboy boots.

I haven't seen "Brokeback" yet but I have to ask once and for all...is it really THAT good a film to receive all of these accolades or is it really the subject matter and the courage it took to make this film that's being honored so?

As if there have never been any gay themed films made before? Not one of this calibre in my estimation. "Jack's Hollywood Screen Kiss" just didn't quite make it. The film is also doing extremely good box office and is on nearly every film critics top ten list, number one on several lists. The public polls on the movie sites are placing it up in the A's and B's, or ***1/2.

On IMDb, depite the obvious "1's" by the homophobes is at a healthy 8 out of 10:

In my opinion, eoe, it is that good a film.

It's going to be an interesting Oscar nite as there are so many good performances and films to choose from.

Very, very competitive this year, mac, in the actor category but I think Phillip Seymour Hoffman's portrayal of Capote will likely trump Ledger's fine performance once again even though Ledger's is truly one from the heart which explores the deepest abysses of the soul and exactly why it could, after all, win the trophy.

I guess Munich made it to the list here - heard there was some kind of technical glitch that prevented jurors from watching the DVD in UK and so it wasn't nominated for the british oscars...

Thanks for the 'once and for all'. I've spoken to only gay guys who have seen the film and like any minority seeing themselves finally portrayed with honesty and respect on screen, it's hard to be impartial sometimes. Reading reviews, you don't know who's giving an honest critique, who's just jumping on the bandwagon or being deliberately cantankerous, who's gay, who's straight and what influence that may have on their review, etc.

The gays were not particularly portrayed as honest and respectful, both of them practicing adultery and not being totally honest with each other. It's just life exposed with all the ups-and-downs, dissapointments and elation in a profound honest look at real human beings, not some fabricated soap opera viewpoint, but deft and deliberate bare-bones (sic Very Happy ) storytelling. In its own way, there's a beauty to the story in its quest for answers to the questions it is asking. The viewer has to have the answers in their heads and hearts. It is not served up on a platter as a gospel for being gay.

Gay people are no different ot straight people so as far as a love story goes, it should be as, or not as traumatic/lovely as a straight relationship being told in a film.
Just coz a character is gay doesnt necesserily mean that that is the point of the film.

I cant wait to see Capote and Transamerica looks good too.

Same chemistry and, in fact, the scientific evidence is that gay men respond to male pheromones -- part of that "chemistry" one always hears about. There is an idealized relationship at the core of "Brokeback Mountain" and the tragedy is that it never really is able to materialize. Unless one needs to see their doctor about whether or not there is something in their chest cavity, it's a sincerely heartbreaking tale that provokes a deeply felt response.

I see that Amy Adams has been nominated for best supporting actress in Junebug. Frankly, I'd never heard of that movie, but a friend of mine who is a member of SAG and who gets all the promotional dvd's offered to give me her copy of Junebug. Has anyone seen it? Is it worth watching?

It's been showing at our local art theater but haven't taken the time to go see it. Excellent critical response, though:
