Now....pardon me if I'm wrong, but filibuster means someone waffling on and on until the session expires, thereby causing the whole thing to go tits up, doesn't it?

That means Kerry will need some help with a speech that uses ten words where one would have sufficed, methinks.

Shall I volunteer my services?

With the danger of exposing my ignorance:

Filibusters have changed from the days of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

Nowadays, a "filibuster" only tables that particular item and the rest of the Senate's business continues as usual. Nobody stands up and reads from a book on the senate floor.

It's more like a motion to continue debate at a later date, and it requires 60 votes to close discussion on the bill.

I think it's nothing more than a ploy to entice the GOP to bring on the nuclear option, with the Dem's hopefully anticipating a negative public reaction.

I think it's up in the air as to which way public sentiment may go--but it may work for them.

It may work against them. I really couldn't call it. I was definitely wrong about the public sentiment surrounding Schiavo.

har! probably more like a ploy to get kerry's mug on the tube.

i can't believe that the republicans really want to do the nukular opshun.... that could come back on them in the future and what could they say then ??

you mention schiavo.. what i came away with out of that was that when it comes down to it, most folks really want other people to mind their own business. especially the government.

might as well just sign off on alito, stick out your tongue and move on.

A filibuster on Alito has nothing to do with principle, and everything to do with politics. More's the pity for our nation.

The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself? Frank Zappa

I can't believe the two of you want to beckon the horror of people unwittingly using dry cleaning bags for parachutes.
