Now....pardon me if I'm wrong, but filibuster means someone waffling on and on until the session expires, thereby causing the whole thing to go tits up, doesn't it?

That means Kerry will need some help with a speech that uses ten words where one would have sufficed, methinks.

Shall I volunteer my services?

Lord E, you haven't heard Senator Kerry speak, have you? i'm sure he appreciates your offer, but he's quite adept at speaking verbosely. Smile

I think that if I were obliged to listen to Kerry drone on for any length of time, I would give him anything that he wanted, just to shut him up! Rolling Eyes

heehee.

The filibuster sure sounds very british to me. At least, it sounds like something the parliament would partake in.

Usually when somebody says something like that (de-moker-rats and exhibitionism), they mean it literally....

This is fine but a little late. Much of what has been passed in terms of anti terrorism legislation can be more accurately described as an attempt to stifle public protest. If much of this legislation were in place 40 years ago the Vietnam War protest, the civil rights movement and many of the other social movements of the 60's would have never happened The current administration seems determined that something like it will never happen again. The role of Alito, Roberts and others are to provide a legal cover for this attempt.

Here I thought this thread would be about Senator Nelson, Johnson or Byrd (though Byrd was probably no big surprise to anyone).

As for Kerry's filibustering; I can think of no greater reminder to the American public why they voted for Bush. Watch for Bush's numbers to climb if he goes through with it (sorry Bear). Of course, that's assuming anyone would be able to stay awake long enough for the annoyance to set in. Who's he going to tag off to? Kennedy? Laughing Perhaps he accepted a bribe from the Clintons to torpedo his own campaign before it even begins. If so, he's certainly chose the appropriate venue.

Bill. Long Time no see.

The reason Kerry lost wasn't because he decided to boldly take political action on a contentious issue.

Leading a filibuster is something that had Kerry done more of, would have helped his campaign. Remember that the charges of "flip flop" hurt him more than anything else.

People voted for Bush because Bush knows how to take care of his base-- something that the Democrats had better learn to do quickly-- and then explain it clearly to the rest of the country. The filibuster would be a great start.

This and the inevitable flip-flop charge we agree on... but that's where our agreement ends. I'd say the next biggest factor in his demise is the man's tendency to pontificate in an uppity, even snobbish manner (and the New England accent really accentuates it to us hicks in the Midwest) while drawing out his words to an exaggerated extent that starts to play on my nerves. He speaks to his constituency as if he were addressing congress and I don't think Joe citizen is very attracted to that. Bush's idiotic Bushisms carry with them a human quality that makes him a bit more likable to the general public and IMHO that is what made the difference to Joe citizen in the last election. A filibuster will only serve to exaggerate his already exaggerated mannerisms and showcase his tendency to be long winded. Were I on his campaign staff; I'd strenuously advise him to host SNL and maybe even do the talk show circuit to try and illustrate a more likable human being. Sad as it may be, I think that's what takes in Joe Citizen as often as not. In these days of hyper-polarity in politics; I really don't think the issues themselves carry as much wait with the ill-informed. That's just my opinion, of course. <shrugs>

Balls? Give me a break.

There's no chance of a filibuster, and Kerry knows it. He is merely trying to position himself with the base of the Democratic Party for 2008.

Kerry is dust! If the Demos don't come up with someone fresh and ready to fight, they can forget it!

blueveinedthrobber cited an article in which CNN wrote:
Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts was lobbying his Democratic colleagues to filibuster the Alito nomination -- an uphill fight, given that none of the chamber's 55 Republicans have opposed his confirmation and three Democrats are on the record supporting it.

Citing Dick Durbin's very appropriate answer, CNN wrote:
"One of the first responsibilities of someone in Congress is to learn how to count," the Illinois Democrat said. "Having made a count, I have come to the conclusion it is highly unlikely that a filibuster would succeed."

My guess: This is a non-starter, and John Kerry knows it. This maneuver has nothing to do with Alito. Rather, its purpose is that Kerry get some tough-sounding message into the record. The next time he runs for office, he'll dig it out and impress the Democratic base with it.

don't care if kerry runs again or not. i won't waste my vote on him a second time.

but, at least he's registering an opposition to the alito appointment.

which is kinda ironic considering the flip-flops i heard from alito regarding his records. i was more or less okay with roberts, but there's something about alito that is troubling to me...
