I have realized how pathetic my geographical knowledge has become.
Can anyone tell me how many new countries spawned from the break up of the former USSR?

There aren't no more than 15 - another source, incl. map.

If you are interest in the various regions, autonomous regions etc of RUSSIA, here's some info,

One could add that there are some self-declared republics that aren't recognized by much any country, but function as de facto independent states: Transnistria, Abkhazia, South-Ossetia and Nagorno-Karabakh.
