Drinking enough water

Reply Wed 11 Jan, 2006 10:16 am
Somedays I realise i havnt had my 8 glasses of water(which i dont do most days)so in th evening I try to drink plenty.

It has the opposite effect.I drink lots then as Im trying to get to sleep I can literally feel my brain shrinking, like its becoming dehydrated, which tends to rsult in a headache.

Why does this happen?

your brain doesn't feel like its shrinking because of the water, water is the single bestest thing we all need, dehydration causes headaches for me, does it happen every tim eu drink later in the day?

That'd be a weird feeling! To feel like your brain is shrinking and getting a headache.

I don't know really. My best guess is that the pain is unrelated to drinking water. Becoming better hydrated usually helps my headaches and such.

It happened last night again.

I tried to drink a fair bit during the day yesterday but also drank water last night, yet it still happened.

Wow, now THAT must be a really weird sensation! I can't say that
I have ever felt it shrinking, but I am altogether too aware of it's
somewhat diminishing capacity as I get older. The memory isn't
nearly as sharp as once it was and my daughters constantly tell me
that I told them about this or that once already - they don't need to
hear it twice. I tell them that they really should be more polite
and considerate. Just humor me. How hard is it to just pretend...listen
& nod now and then, but don't keep reminding me that I've already told
you this at least once before, and have just forgotten " again".
No doubt this is just part of the general "wearing out process" of the
body/brain etc. as I get older. Aging is the natural net result of
growing and I fear that regardless of HOW much water I could ever drink,
this wearing out is going to continue whether I like it or not. Rolling Eyes

Oh beleive me my brain started to disapear in my mid 20's, its quite scary how little activity is going on up there in my noggin.

I had a drink last night and again my brain shrank and I got a headache.
I have decided i have an odd body, all over, not just above the neck.

You know, I should definitely drink more water but I also heard of those stories where marathon runners drank way too much water and had to drop out of the race, etc:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/04/15/earlyshow/contributors/emilysenay/main688487.shtml

Though I am not comparing self to a marathon runner...

I heard a young guy loved water and drank so much he flushed all the 'good toxins' out of his body and died!

Yeah, Snopes has all sorts of good stuff like that.

I suppose that like anything else, too much water is bad for you.

Why should you drink lots of water? Eight glasses specifically? (in spite of that days exercise amount?) Im rather sure my body has this built in function called 'thirst' (its pretty good, yous should all check it out) which makes be drink just the right amount of water that I require.

Years ago, when I was a kid in summer camp, they used to give the kids salt tablets when there was a heat wave.

Anyhow, I think that the operative word here is moderation. You need to drink when you exercise, especially in hot weather, but don't overdo it.

When it is hot, and I walk (usually about 4 miles), I take a 20 oz. bottle of water with me, and just sip along the way.

Do yourself a little research. Drinking enough water is crucial to your health, and if you're thirsty, it's because you're already dehydrated.

What? What is that? Anyway, if you didn't drink water youd die, yes thats true - most people know that. And if your not dehydrated your not thirsty - we know. You havent introduced any new info so whats your point?

I think the point is that most folks only drink when they are already thirsty, and we really should be drinking BEFORE thirst hits. Keep the body hydrated as much as possible, rather than waiting for it to become dehydrated to drink.

Marathon runners have all sorts of kooky things happen. That there is a whole other game. Laughing If you are a serious runner, you need to have a good handle on nutrition/anatomy/etc.

Thirsty is not good enough in dry climates, as I understand it.

I also have seen citations from reputable sources re the thing about too much water for marathon runners.

I used to read Runner's World (Runners' World?) but not lately, thus I've missed a batch of pros and cons re throwing water at yourself.

It would seem to me that electrolytes matter.

Why should we be drinking before thirst hits? I have frequently ridden long bike rides, and drank only after when the ride was finished (forgot my water) n i have been fine (n gone a lot faster than my mates, who where drinking continuously).
