Anon-Voter,

Hey! Calm down why don't you? Have you got a bee in your bonnet or what?http://www.aaa-clipart.com/data/anim3/bees/an4.gif

Anon, I understand you have issues with some things and I can appreciate that. What I don't understand is why you seem to take out what you feel about "some" Christians in such a way. I really would like to understand.

This is obviously very important to you. Can we calmly discuss this maybe?

i disagree, tico. prayer in a public place does become a political act. plain and simple. whether or not those who pray see it that way or not -- other people are involved just by witnessing this act and they may have feelings/opinions about it. after all, it's a public place.

i'm not telling anyone to pray or not to pray - frankly i don't give a damn. all i was trying to do is to explain to momma that her expectations from this forum were unrealistic.

The only quibble i have with Dasha's position is to point out that MOAN's expectations likely remain unrealistic--i take issue only with the verb form "were."

Particularly when the prayer is about supporting a particular side in a controversial war (oops, invasion/occupation!).

WBEZ - the npr station in chicago, had a wonderful broadcast on This American Life about soldiers' life in Iraq. They were reading from some famous blog from the field (forgot the address, but maybe they mention it). the broadcast was from the end of 2005, episode 302 from 11/18/2005, Act two.

"We hear from Captain Chuck Ziegenfuss, Trueman Muhrer-Irwin, and Colby Buzzell, who has recently compiled a book of his war writing called My War: Killing Time in Iraq. (32 minutes)"

at www.thislife.org - you can listen through realplayer.

We would soon have seen how political prayer is in such circumstances if there had been a thread to pray for the Iraqi insurgents.

I do not think the people claiming it is apolitical would hold to this line.

Then feel free to pray for both sides. Nobody is suggesting you need to pick a side. You have some objection to prayer for the American troops?

More to the point ... what is your objection to others who wish to pray for the troops? "Religion being shoved down your throat"?

I object on several bases, not the least of which is that the scripture of christians enjoins them to pray and worship privately, and therefore, such public expressions constitute a form of hypocricy. I consider that the point of this thread is to tout the christian virtue of the author, as opposed to actually being an exercise in support of the troops.

After you click the link, look to the left and select the rubric "Episodes/Real Audio, by year originally produced," then click "05." On that page, scroll down to Episode 302. At the bottom of the entry for episode 302 you'll see a "clickable link" for the story to which Dasha refers.
