I agree with Bree. The modern trend is to use fewer and fewer commas.

Which is why, I said, "A" looked right as well. I think, I tend, to use commas far too much.

I believe the rule is that the comma is optional in a compound sentence where both clauses are short and do not contain internal punctuation.

I tend to steer clear of anything that involves internal punctuation nowadays. It usually includes a week or two of awful tasting pills.

About "B"...

Not that I'm trying to respond but only making an analogy with French:

The conjunction "but" is used to connect coordinate elements. Why should you then separate those elements with a comma?

Depending on how you say it, technically, can't A,B,D be right.

Of cource I'm comma crazy.

Isn't that what punctuation is for. I'm trying to learn it and others are gitting rid of it.

sorry i'm wrong.

B is correct.

From Purdue's OWL:

"1. Skim your paper, looking only for the seven coordinating conjunctions:

and, nor, but, so, for, or, and yet.

2. Stop at each of these words to see whether there is an independent clause (a complete sentence), on both sides of it. (For more help, see our handout on independent clauses.)

3. If so, place a comma before the coordinating conjunction. Examples:

She wanted to buy a new car, but she didn't have enough money to do so.
The wind blew fiercely, and the rain poured down.
Alaska was not the last state admitted into the US, nor does it have the lowest total population"
