A question about A2K & posters & possible multiple IDs.

There's only one identity for RoverRoad. But there's a dozen or so different moods in any given hour.

I have had only one indentity, too, for the whole time I've been here. (Almost from day 1. - My Abuzz identity, BTW) The same can't be said for some other posters here, though, of that I'm convinced.

But, is there any reason we can't have such a policy? I'm serious.

Just timber typing here, msolga ... I dunno as any such policy would serve any real purpose, and I dunno how it could be enforced; the internet is pretty damned anonymous. As it is, anyone can do pretty much anything they want to here, so long as it doesn't involve spam, hate speech, porn, gratuitous vulgarity, intentional disruptiveness, personal attack, or statutorially illegal activity ... that's about it. Nothing in the rules against not behaving in a forthright, responsible, adult manner as long as the behavior remains within the limits.

Right. Thanks. That answers my question, timber: it can't be enforced. That's really a shame. So I guess we just count on most posters having integrity, hey?

The problem is, I think, if you make it against TOS --it would make it more compelling for people to do, and the snipe hunts from well-meaning people, plus running down suspected 'infractions' would keep the mods ridiculously busy.

I don't mind that people are allowed to do it--but I don't think much of those who do.

I just make a big deal out of Chrissee/Harper/ twinpeaks because 1) he denies it and 2) I dislike him intensely and 3) he has conversations with himself, backing up his insane theories.

I'll out anyone who meets those important criteria.

I'm not too familiar with Chrissee, to be honest with you. But there are quite a few other suspects, too. If it seems I'm making a "big deal" out of this it's because I really like the idea that people are who they say they are! And it has a great impact on the integrity of a forum, whether the offenders are identified or not. I have absolutely no respect for anyone playing silly identity games, for whatever reason. And sooner or later, they cook their goose, one way or another ..

When I cook my goose, it's usually delicious...

And, yes, it seems not that difficult to spot the trolls...

I see you quoted "big deal". I wanted to make sure you knew I wasn't insinuating YOU were doing that, at all. I wasn't even thinking it. I happen to agree with you completely. I was merely saying I DO make a big deal out of that particular multiple offender alter-wise.

I see two categories: People who leave and return with a new identity--which doesn't bother me--and people who are running more than one identity at the same time, and use their alters to manipulate discussions.

They are wimpy freaks.

I was a moderator on another answer board a while back. We had to have multiple identities, one as a moderator and one as a general poster. That site actually didn't allow it's members to have multiple identities. It was tough to enforce and there were a lot fewer members there than there are here. When they were caught they were suspended from the site. They would usually come back under a different name, but since the site was so small you could usually tell the personality behind the person posting. That combined with the IP address would expose them, but it is tedious.

Yep! Laughing

OK, I see what you mean, Lash.

I'm wondering though, if people who are excommunicated for very bad form can return with another identity? Is this covered by the TOS?

Thanks for that insight, roverroad. It must be really tough, though, moderating huge board like A2K. Hats off to the folk that do it!

I think the excommunicated have returned. I think I remember Craven saying they could, but if they behaved, he wasn't worried about it--if they repeated offensive behavior, they were tossed again.

I think only one was investigated and permanently bounced. (I'd LOVE to know what she did.)

Pardon this stuff about excommunication, folks. It's a hangover from my RC childhood! Laughing

Ah, so they can return! That's interesting!

Yeah, sure.

But neither you nor your 50 alters can actually manage BLACK, can you?

It can be done, but it's not fool proof. You can ban an IP address but that's only effective if the IP address is static. If it's Dynamic then you have to ban a whole range of IP addresses and then you run the risk of blocking out valid users.

You could block it by looking for a cookie, until the user clears their cookies out. You could block it by computer name but then the user can just change their computer name. There are lots of things you can do, but all are easy for the user to get defeat.

You could send some kind of signature file to their computer to look for, but a reformat would take care of that.

I guarantee you if I got banned I could get back in under a different name. That's not a dare. Laughing
