in god we trust-part 2

to those that followed my original post about the Colorado Senator that submitted the bill to mandate the sign "IN GOD WE TRUST" in every classroom of every public school, the bill was defeated by a 20 to 15 vote in the Colorado Senate with the comment from Senator Doug Linkhart "this is a silly bill."

Great news! The bill was more than silly. IMO, it was offensive!

Phoenix, whom did the bill offend? There was no direct indication on any specific religion in the motto, so it could not insult the religious minorities.

steissd-theology of any religion is not a component of US secular life. Our public schools are secular.

Dys

Good point.

Apparently some people are only concerned with whether or not a law offends "religious" people. Those of us who are agnostics or atheists apparently don't count in their scheme of things.

'God' is specific to Christianity.

If the bill said, "In Buddha We Trust", or "In Yahweh We Trust", or "In Allah We Trust" (or, as dys has indicated, "In Nothing We Trust") then those would, likewise, be religion-specific.

The US Constitution specifically forbids this connection.

steissd= secular, which is what our nation legally is, means NOT a component of ANY religion. the word god pretty specifically refers to a religious entity.

I have a $50 bill right here, and I find this motto on it... Is it illegal?

It could be, Steissd. Send it to me and I'll check it out. If it is bad, I'll get rid of it for you. No use you getting in any trouble.

The bill is quite legal: I got it from the bank. I asked about the inscription: "In God We Trust".

we also had Sen Joseph McCarthy but we like to pretend he never existed. unfortunately his side kick Richard Nixon almost destroyed our nation.

I suspect it is not -- but I'm not sure.

Does anyone know if it has been tested in court?

By the way -- whether it is legal or illegal -- is almost besides the point.

It is insulting in a way to people who do not trust the various gods -- and shouldn't really be there.

Frankly, I think it is little more than posturing.

Appreciate the world view, steissd, and am in no disagreement with you, but here in the good ol' US of A, "God" only means one kinda religion.

Preferably Southern Baptist.

That's baptism by sprinklin', not dippin'.

That multi-national, multi-cultural crapola sounds all nice and smarty-pants, but it just don't float.

And yeah, sounds like yore money ain't no good. Better turn it in to Frank.

Praise God, and pass the ammunition.

(BTW: Happy Passover.)

I repeat for the zillionth time: Why do religious fanatics want to cram their God down our throats? All it does is make us resentful, not compliant.
