Well, you gotta remember Dag, that we US people see only what our media feels is important (sad yes....) so for us, Katrina was the biggest story covered.

Was it the biggest story period? I don't know because I didn't get to see a lot of other things that happened around the world.

The London bombings were covered but honestly, I think I learned more about them here on A2K than anywhere else.

FWIW, on its site the Dutch public broadcaster has a "year overview" on 2005, so this, apparently, is y'r typical Dutch perspective on the year that was:

Earth tested by natural disasters
- Tsunami (aftermath, charity actions)
- Earth quake in Pakistan
- Katrina
- Rita, Stan, Wilma

Terrorism ever closer
- Attacks in Londen
- Attacks in Sharm el-Sheik (Egypt), Bali and Amman
- Trial against murderer of Theo van Gogh, prevention of new attack, arrests of "Hofstad Group"
- New, controversial terror laws

Iraq: Democracy and violence
- January and (more succesful) December elections
- New constitution
- Many new attacks
- Trial against Saddam

The Hague (politics) at a loss
- Referendum rejection of EU constitution
- Change in (Dutch) constitution to allow elected mayor falls through, minister resigns

Celebration and happiness for royal family
(not gonna list specifics)

Festive year on the (stock) markets
(not gonna list specifics)
