Mctag, yes, don't know why I left out the translation to begin with ... doh moment. Reading about Iraq's women and children dying in such large numbers caused a mental link, made me think of the ghost dance, trail of tears and the inhumanities suffered by the native Americans. Back then it was called 'Manifest Destiny', today , 'collateral damage'. Both terms used by cowardly men to avoid the horrific reality of their bloody conquest.

I agree the chaos in Iraq was anticipated and is not contrary to American interests. (242 people shot dead in Baghdad in last 3 weeks accoring to UK Independent). But the logic of your argument begs questions about terrorist outrages, and whose interests they serve that we may think but never dare ask, agree?

IMO the issues regarding a Palestinian homeland and Jerusalem are no doubt negotiable. However, regarding the issue of right of return, that is a show stopper. National suicide is not an acceptable solution. Apparently, what the Arabs could not achieve by the force of arms they are attempting to gain diplomatically. They and their allies in the EU know that Israel cannot and will not accede to that demand.

Maybe we are seeing Manifest Destiny on a global scale? I don't regard the US as the Great Satan btw, far from it. But just as you can't make an omlett without breaking eggs, so you can't build an Empire without breaking a few heads; as we found in the 19th Cent.

And as we justified Empire building by appeals to "civilising heathens" so the new AGE (American Global Empire perhaps) is based on bringing liberty democracy and freedom to peoples who didn't know they needed it. Its that basic hypocracy that gets me, not necessarily Empire building itself, America would be truly unique if it did not exploit its opportunity.

Back in the 60's when good friends got together to rap and share a bowl my favorite theme was a global or world government. I have always believed it would happen and always felt it was right.

GWB s not the man to make it happen ..
Bold prediction ........ it will take a woman.

Don't know about women, but I do know it will not take America alone. Checks and balances on a global scale. Were we sharing the same bowl, Geli?!

Actually when you said you shared a bowl, I thought you might have meant a bowl of condoleeza rice. Back in old blighty, we are (well I am) completely unfamiliar with such exotic names, it took me a while to distinguish Bush's NSA from an item on my local Indian restaurant menu.

Republicans sharing....

Don't know if any of you caught the story of the new (or upcoming) Rolling Stone issue wherein a young male TV actor (This Seventies Show) discloses that the Bush girls attended a party at his Hollywood home last year where they threw back the beer (underage) and did the pupil-dilation thing from a hookah.

Nope, Geli. Tie dye and bell bottoms had not yet reached small villages in the coastal ranges of Spain. However, we did not lack for intellectual pretension, cheap wine, and a complete lack of schedule -- except feeding the cats, of course.

Krugman nails 'em, again:

After reading the article at NYT Online about the expert stagecrafting of Bush's every appearance ( "Keepers of Bush" ) and then the op/ed I excerpted above ( Paths To Glory ) I think I will now go retch up my oatmeal.

Yeh blatham ,

I saw the actor from "That 70's Show" on I believe the "Tonite Show" or "Dave Letterman". That fact about the bush daughters just slipped out and most of the audience didn't seem to catch it. I was wondering when that was going to rise to the surface!

I thought it was unusually kind for the press to keep their ink out of Chelsea Clinton's business.

Unless all of you believe she was virginal and didn't deign to imbibe during her parents' time in the WH.

I think the Bushs' daughters are entitled to the same treatment.

Actually, "Hate Radio" aka Rush Limbaugh had some very nasty comments about Chelsea Clinton's appearance. Chelsea never gave the press any ammunition while she was in the WH and under close scrutiny. The twins, who never actually lived in the WH, got less than what they deserved with their conduct. People that know them from their private school in Texas know the real stories.
