So they analysed the smile of Mona and found it mostly happy , a little discusted and a bit sad.
She wasn't grinning from ear-to-ear so you could tell she wasn't totally happy about posing. More nonplussed would better describe her.

I read a long time ago that the woman who posed for the Mona Lisa had recently had her baby die, so it wouldn't have been appropriate to smile too big.

I doubt it, Chai. Smiling wasn't considered proper in portraits until the 20th Century. Before that, it was thought to make the subject look "frivolous." Take a look at other portraits of the Italian Renaissance...or even later. No smiling.
