I read Harry Potter (I don't care what anybody says, it's a very well-written series), and I was wondering what the name Voldemort means. I have a theory that it might be French for something. If you break it up into Vol-de-mort. "Mort" means "death" in French (I think), and "de" means "of" (or at least it does in Spanish). So Vol-de-mort means blank-of-death. Of course, this is all speculation on my part. Satisfy my curiosity, would you?
While I'm not certain, I think it's kind of like "Darth Vader," which draws on a few language sources to suggest "dark father," though I don't think that's a direct translation in any language.
In French, if that is the origin, it would mean "Flight of Death."

I thought Darth Vader was supposed to be a mangling of "Death Invader" and Obi-wan of "Obedient One."
As to the "vol" part, she may be playing on the
Latin word "volo" meaning "want" or "wish".
OMG..
I always thought it was Voldermort..but its Voldemort......without the 'r'
ummmmm.......
I don't know any translations though.......
I think the French translation given by Setanta (Flight of death) is the origin of this name. I remember having read that Rowling used to teach French, so it would explain a few things...
