"Universo confida" - Latin, Italian, or neither?

Hi Everybody,

A few months ago I asked for help translating the phrase 'trust the universe' into Latin and was advised that 'universo confida' was the correct translation. The translation is for a tattoo I intend to have, so naturally I wanted to check it was accurate. I looked in a Latin dictionary and neither 'universo' nor 'confida' were in there! I have since found out both these words are Italian.

I contacted Latin speakers at various universities in the UK, including Cambridge, and none could provide a completely satisfactory translation of 'trust the universe' in Latin (it was the Latin speakers themselves who advised me that their translations were not satisfactory, not my personal judgement!). The problem seems to be that there is no word in Latin for the universe as we understand it today. 'In deo fidete', which I believe translates as 'in God I trust', was the closest to my meaning that many could get.

The reason I don't want my tattoo in English is that it's not the most beautiful language, and I don't really want everybody I meet here (in England) to be able to read it straight away. So what language to use? Well, I have decided that I kind of like the words 'universo confida', and Italian being the 'language of love', and one I am able to pronounce, it seems to make sense to have my tattoo in Italian.

I would be most grateful if somebody could please advise me on the correct Italian translation of 'trust the universe'?

I have been advised that 'confida nell'universo' means 'trust IN the universe': does 'universo confida' mean 'trust the universe', or does it not really mean anything?
