Alexander had many goals which evolved with age.

First, he wanted to conquer land to see the Ocean that was believed to encircle Europe and Asia at the edge of the Earth.

Then he wanted to take revenge from the Persians invading Greece circa 490 BC.

Finally he wanted an Empire that comprised all known world.

That narcissistic clown had a single goal, to amass, by means of personally slaughtering as many humans as were unable to get away when the blood lust was on him--to amass as much "glory" as possible.

Alexander III of Macedon succeeded in his conquest because of the military organization his father Phillip created, and because of the officer corps Phillip had created. There is absolutely no reason to consider him a military genius, and he showed not the least talent for nor interest in imperial admininstration. His "empire" began to crumble within, literally, days of his death.

Alexander was a murderous, egomaniacal sociopath, who deserves no credit for what he personally did, who accomplished nothing which could not have been accomplished without him, and who could not have accomplished his "conquests" if he had been obliged to rely soley upon his own talents. Of all the people in history accorded the cognomen "the Great," he deserves it least. There was nothing great about him.
