KOLKATA, India (Reuters) - A woman receiving treatment for diabetes at a state-run hospital in eastern India lost one of her eyes after ants nibbled away at it, officials said on Tuesday.
The patient recovering from a post-surgery infection shrieked for help as the ants attacked her on Sunday night, but nurses told her it was normal to feel pain from the infection.
On Monday, the patient's family saw a gaping hole with swarming ants in it when they lifted the bandage on her left eye.
Authorities of the Sambhunath Hospital in Kolkata said they were probing the incident.
"It's not uncommon for ants to attack diabetic patients. We have set up a committee to investigate the unfortunate incident," hospital superintendent A. Adhikary said.
Scampering rats and stray cats and dogs sharing bed space with patients are not uncommon sights at India's overcrowded state-run hospitals that are used by millions of poor and middle-class people.
I saw that story earlier, Edgar, and actually submitted it, but when I hit the preview button to make sure the link was working, I discovered, to my dismay, that one was propelled to the front page of the site and unable to read the story. Frustrated, I gave up. Were I to possess your intellect the thought would have occurred to me to copy and paste.
I guess that's where you and I are different.
I paste because links often disappear.
Bet shell keep her eyes out for ants from now on
You're a cold man, farmerman.
May the ghosts of a thousand eyeless demons frequent your dreams.
It could have been worse. The little buggers wouldn't have stopped til they had cleaned out her entire skull had it not been for the alertness of her family.
Why would that have been worse? Dead is dead.
shes not sufficiently dead
I just reread the story because of farmerman't cryptic comment. The story I read this morning claimed the woman died.
How many damn people are having their eyes eaten by black ants anyway?
Here's the text from the article I read....
NEW DELHI -- A woman died in a Calcutta hospital after ants ate one of her eyes as she was recovering from a cornea operation, media reports said yesterday.
Gauri Chakraborty, 55, had complained of terrible pain after the operation at a state-run hospital, but a nurse told her it was normal and left her unattended, her son Soumen told the Press Trust of India news agency.
He said that when her bandage was removed the next day, they found big black ants nibbling at her eye, PTI reported.
"She died a ghastly death. We don't even know the reason of her death," Amitabha Kar, Chakraborty's son-in-law, told PTI.
"It's not uncommon for ants to attack diabetic patients. We have set up a committee to investigate the unfortunate incident," hospital superintendent A. Adhikary said.
I only heard of "weasels tearing my flesh" before this.
