I've seen both in printed text. Just wondering which is the correct one?
Eg: This question has been splitted/split into two parts.
Thanks heaps. Any idea how splitted came about? I've seen it lots.
I've never seen splitted in printed text, or heard it as a spoken word either. Perhaps you are thinking of a similar word, 'splintered'.
I Googled "splitted" and found a few references. Upon closer inspection, the sites were full of grammatical errors. I don't think any of the texts that mention "splitted" were written by native English speakers.
"Split" is the past tense of "split". I split it yesterday, I am splitting it now, it is split, it will be split next Thursday. Just one of the many vagaries of the language.
splitted is an overextention of the grammatical rule that when you put a verb into the simple past tense, the correct way to do so is to add -ed to the stem of the verb. English is full of exceptions, though, and this is just one of them. Children often do this when they are learning to speak because they can recognize rules of speech very early on, but exceptions have to be added to the memory banks. Some people don't know all the exceptions and may write splitted, which is technically incorrect.
