Me too, though I've heard of Second City for years.

I have a question about taxis..

I am weighing my options for getting up to Evanston, Chicago's first suburb north. I can take the El there from right near my hotel and get off not too far awwy from my old neighborhood, and I'd be comfortable doing that in the afternoon. I might want to take a taxi back. If I do that on Friday, I might take a taxi to the Duke of Perth, and then later back to my hotel. (Still not clear when and if meeting old childhood friends, and am thinking I'll check out the old neighborhood earlier on my own anyway.)

So, can I just get a taxi by flagging one down on Ridge Avenue in Evanston, or hop a bus to Howard Street and try and find one there, or use my cell phone and call a cab company.....

I presume if one is on Michigan Avenue one can just hail a cab, but not sure re the rest of the Chicago environs.

next question -

if two or more a2k friends take a taxi going to the same place, is the fare split or paid twice (I presume split - that's what we did in San Francisco and NY). It worked out to be quite inexpensive in SF as we got taxis in groups of four and five.

if two or more a2k friends take a taxi going in the same direction but getting out at two different places, what happens re the fare??

I can answer a couple of the questions:

You can split cab fare (at least I have, hope I wasn't breaching any etiquette, Joe or another local can answer more definitively).

I think you'd have to plan on calling a cab in Evanston. They're readily available nearly everywhere downtown (as in, not just Michigan avenue), but once you get out of the downtown area, calling is a better idea.

I've no problems at all sharing a taxi and spilt the tax (I've never exprienced that it must be paid twice Embarrassed ).

On my way to from the airport, I'll use (already booked) Continental Airport Express - I got a reduced fair via my hotel. ($23 normally one way, I think.)

That's fine. I mention it only because it seems visitors always put Second City at the top of the list of things to see. Thomas, since you're staying on later than most others, maybe some of the natives can arrange a trip there with you (I'd certainly be interested).

It shouldn't be too difficult to get a taxi in downtown Evanston. But I'd still recommend taking the el (if you take a bus to Howard St. you might as well take it to the Howard St. el station). There's a surcharge for cab trips that go from suburb to city or vice-versa.

Splitting cab fares is fine. There's a dollar charge paid for each additional passenger, but there shouldn't be any extra charge for stopping multiple times to let passengers out.

Ah, good to know about the surcharge.

I've figured out that the Red Line El does stop near Sublime's and stops at Main in Evanston. Geez, I used to sell Girl Scout cookies next to that subway entrance. Can't remember if we used to have to change El trains at Howard Street or if you just sit tight all the way downtown. Hard to tell from the transportation system maps (red line turns to black at Howard, I think).

Also thanks for clarifying that the bus if I take it should go to the El Station, not just Howard and Ridge.. (I'm guessing the El station is a little east of Howard and Ridge).

If we go on Tuesday or Wednesday we should have no trouble getting in.

The Evanston (Purple) line trains end at Howard, except during rush hour, when they run express to Belmont and then to the Loop. If you catch the southbound train between 3 and 6 p.m. it will probably be an express to the Loop (check the signs on the cars -- they will either say "Howard" or "Loop"). My advice, if you're going from Evanston to the Duke of Perth on Friday, is to take the train to the Belmont station and then take a cab from there (it's a short ride or a long walk).

The 201 Bus goes directly to the Howard St. station, which is about seven blocks east of Ridge.

The section of Miami And The Seige Of Chigago entitled Chicago August 24-29 by Norman Mailer is a must read for prospective visitors to the city.

Whatcha talkin' bout? Bill's been putting together an itinerary for us. I ain't seen nuttin on there about eatin' pizza and lookin' at no fountain.
We're gonna dance naked on the sky deck of the sears tower and he said somethin' about slippin' on over to Michigan Avenue and catchin' a riverboat cruise to do a little nude sunbathing on the top deck. Some of the others are planning to go skinny dippin' at the riverfront if'in they have some fireworks goin' on, one night.

Pizza and fountains? Perhaps .........during our occasional quiet moments.

Babbling brookie-

I'm a bit shy you know.I'm frightened of sexy young ladies. They have caused me so much pain and suffering that I made a vow and anyway there's the Cup Final and a Test Match and my maids get up to all sorts of naughtinesses if I'm not there to supervise them and flying seems so absurd and I'm a fixture in the pub late at night because I'm needed to console those brothers of mine who can't resist the wiles of siren voices and have had the marrow sucked from their bones.

I'm a country boy and big cities are not my cup of bitters.Who would feed the ducks? One of them follows me everywhere.Donald I mean.I was there when he hatched.Ducks attach themselves to the first thing they see-they think it is their Mum.

So I'm stuck really but I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time without me.

PS-I heard a song once called By A Babbling Brook.
