The art museum, 10 a.m. Saturday - discussion was on the last page, I think. Some folks may want to go other times..
J_B mentioned being able to let some in on her membership, but I don't remember if there is a number limit. (Probably is).

On the core meeting time, of 1-5, with room ours from 12-12, sounds fine.. I don't think anyone disagreed.

As a matter of fact, on Tuesdays all of the stuff down there is free, such as the Shedd Aquarium among others.

I spent a good deal of time staring at this painting....

I guess I could really relate to it.

This is a good resource:

http://www.naperville-lib.org/OtherWebSites/entertainment/chicagofreedays.htm

Unfortunately, Gus, seems like the widespread free days are concentrated in the off-season:

Quote:

Some major museum free days have changed. The institutions are playing games with the Park District requirements, shifting from one free day per week to fifty-two free days per year, concentrated in the off-season.

The three "Museum Campus" institutions (Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium), plus the Museum of Science and Industry, now have the same free days, Mondays and Tuesdays from September through February (excluding the Christmas-New Year's season, and plus a few extras noted below).

heph, I've copied your post over to the facts thread. I'll update the listing on Monday with the info that's been added.

http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=67531&start=50

Soz, we've settled on Saturday at 10:00 for the first group and perhaps a second group later in the day or a different day.

One thought for meeting for lunch on Saturday is to meet at the Millenium Park Grille. We don't need to have the formal party room and can make a reservation for lunch without settling on a menu, etc.

On the core time for the Sunday meet. I recall sublime1 offering bloody/virgin mary's to the set up crew at noon with the gathering starting at one. Some folks are leaving later on Sunday, so an afternoon core time is good.

Bill, Brooke, Eva, Timber, JP, the Yits, georgebob1, satt_sf (?) and others who will be traveling to Chicago, please repost your facts info on the other thread so that it's all in one place. Thanks.

For the locals - me, sublime1, joe, jw, smog - should we indicate our availability for gatherings on the facts thread? I'm busy Thursday night and all of Friday, but am available much of the rest of the time.

I think I'll be perverse and stay at the museum for lunch..
when I went to NYC in 2004 I went to the Met Museum for three days.. I have a feeling the hours at the art institute are going to matter a lot for me. (not to put that wackiness on anyone else). On the other hand, maybe I should look at what's there online before I speak so cavalierly. Anyway, we can easily split up..

That's too bad. When I was there and realized I could see all these places for free, I decided to celebrate my savings by taking a few friends out to dinner. We went to some pizza place (I forget the name; the one with all the graffiti on the walls) and the bill came to eighty five dollars.

So, in end, it cost me about sixty dollars more.

I understand why people never give me the "genius" label.

osso, I think a split is the best way to enjoy the museum. We all have different taste in art, and the one thing I won't have is patience. Wink We can always set a time to meet for lunch - earlier the better, before it gets too crowded. Wink

That's a given, CI. I meant a split for lunch. J_B mentioned - a few pages back - a Thai place across the street, and an italian place, and the Millennial Grille.

I just checked the holdings at the museum. I know I'm going to need more than, say, and hour and a half - I could spend that just in photography. So I will stay and go to the museum cafe.

On going around a museum with people, I don't mind if friends are in the same room and speak up once in a while but, like most of us, I have my own ways to see a place. Dart through sort of fast, and then go look more closely, maybe more than once, at favorites.

When Diane and I went to the Met together, it was by then my third day there and I'd already seen the main show about four times. It was a massive show, with a lot of major works, on the effect of Spanish painters on later French painters - the Manet Velasquez exhibit. That set of exhibit rooms was big and rich with things to just stare at.. She saw mostly that, that day, and I visited there for a few minutes at a time between going around to other parts of the museum. When we went through the Frick Museum, we went through it separately except for the last big gallery room and the bookstore. Very comfortable, seeing the show by yourself really, but having a friend around somewhere.

Osso, I spend entire days at the Art Institute by myself. I love it there. No problem with going in together, splitting up and regrouping elsewhere - or not. I'm fine with meeting at 10:00, meeting others for lunch at noonish, and then going back in later, or going another day even.

I gave them a call and they don't accept reservations... but would like to be warned if our group grows to say 20 people. The girl who answered the phone thought a couple early arrivals should prevent any difficulty. Keep signing on folks! Manager's name is Mike Miller.

We've made plans to meet J_B at the Art Institute, Thomas (just turn the site around), so "maybe not" can't really be ...
