Sorry Dag, but since you're not coming to Chicago, I'll have to burn it myself.

On architecture tours, I'm interested in looking at some links on tours. The trolley one sounded amusing when I first read about it, and the boat one sounds like fun. I'd like to look at the sites Joe and realJohn mentioned to see about other possibilities. Who knows, I might like to go on all of them.

Won't have a chance to review the tour info for a few days.

I think someone else has posted a link to the Chicago Architecture Foundation, but here it is again:
CAF tours
CAF tour schedule for May
The CAF has river cruises as well as walking tours. There are also some bus tours, and there's even a Segway tour of the lakefront.

If you're interested in soil, the Field Museum in Chicago has a marvellous exhibit.

Worth the trip.

References have been made to a visit to the Art Institute. I am not about to read through the last few pages to find out who said what about that. Is there are time scheduled? I would love to tag along.

Yes, the Art Institute is a must-see for me. And if the weather isn't cooperative, it sounds like a better idea than an architecture tour.

And guys, please scroll past the troll. If we stop answering him, he won't get his jollies here.

I was at the Art Institute last summer, mac. If you examine the lion's belly on the left side of the entrance you will notice a small bit of graffiti. It reads "Ratzenhofer was here"

I'm sure it's still there, since I was fairly discreet.

I think I saw the signature, but if I remember correctly it said "KILROY WAS HERE!"

Last I heard, the Art Institute was a possible Saturday event. No time set yet.

I think so. I definitely need a drink after reading that!!!

I'm leaving Friday (day after tomorrow) for 11 days. As soon as I get back, I intend to make reservations.

In order to use up as much oil as possible, I will be taking a taxi alone (no other riders...that would be efficient) to the airport, flying to Chicago with one stop (extra fuel for takeoffs) and taking another taxi (alone again) to the hotel. Buses use up tons of fuel, I am told!...but they carry multiple passengers. That's no good. Same with other mass transit. Hmm. Guess I'll have to take taxis around Chicago, too. I did think about renting a car. I got goosebumps just thinking of all the gas I could burn up circling for parking spots in a city the size of Chicago! But that would waste a lot of time I could spend visiting with all of you. So I suppose the next least energy efficient option will be to use taxis while I'm there. After all, they'll use up extra gas coming to get me every time I call. I hope we have a very full agenda...I want to make as many trips as possible.

Does anyone know if Chicago has a taxi service that uses Hummers? I understand they get around 5 miles to the gallon.

Is there a law of opposites whereby the better the advertising the worse the product? probably not there are too many dreadful furniture shop adverts with Linda Barker flogging awful three piece suites for it to work. In the case of John Smiths Extra Smooth Bitter it has a strong argument though. Replacing the cardboard cut-out man with comedy's hottest property Peter Kay has improved product knowledge of John Smiths immeasurably. But as good and as funny as those adverts are it is even more laughable to suggest John Smiths is a good beer.

Don't get me wrong it will not poison you and is quite drinkable but in an age when top beers like Timothy Taylor Landlord, Shepherd Neames Spitfire, Abbot Ale, Marston's Pedigree and Theakston's are available (to name but a few) why on earth drink this stuff. I am generally in favour of the condition of canned beers when allied to the brilliant technology of the widget ( I confess to being involved in the polymer industry when they were developed.) but over the years have tended to but bottled beers more and more and have preferred the taste and texture of bottled beer to the gassy canned variety.

John Smiths is probably extra smooth because it is brewed in a process mor akin to a chemical process than a brewery. Rather than small lots it is brewed in thousands of gallons at a time. Any sense of individuality is lost in such processes. The beer might be of good strength and has a consistency many micro breweries can only dream of (or fear more like) but where is the character. This is as comfortable in a real pub as the BMW driving, mobile phone fetishist new man we all loathe. Give me the toothless old salt who has seen the world and I'll drink with him.

It's more often 105 F here and the beer is Dos XX's or, perhaps Corona.

I hate to be a bother... But is there anyone here who can give me a brief update as to plans people have made for this gathering? I haven't been in here in a bit and the conversation seems to have gone several different directions. So rather than try to gleen a few tid bits here and there, I wondered if anyone would be willing to give me a few specifics. It would be much appreciated. I am getting very excited about this! Thanks. Smile

I just bought one of those small screen digital viewers, and wondered if anybody would be interested in looking at some pictures I took on some of my latest trips? I loaded 372 of the Guatemala and Costa Rica, but wondered what else people would enjoy. I'll also load some of my Italy pictures before May.
