Thomas wrote:As best I remember, that trip is actually just 30 minutes. Of course, I am not an American, so I use public transportation by default. Many Americans seem to think they can drive from the airport to downtown on a Friday afternoon. They find themselves parking on Kennedy Expressway rather than driving on it, as I could observe from my train.
The train is definitely the way to go, from either O'Hare or Midway. It's a $2 ride as opposed to a $30 cab fare to downtown.
Thanks, Joe! And Thomas is right about the plane ride, it is only 1/2 hr.
I take it you'll be there, Joe?

Of course I'll be there. I don't have to book a flight and I already have a place to stay in town.

I'll be there as well. And I don't have to book a flight neither (did it already 6 weeks ago) and I have a place to stay, too. (Since the very same time.)
Yay! Have we heard from anyone else overseas yet?
Thomas is also from Deutschland, dev.
I think satt_fs just indicated an intent to come and lives in, er.. um... Japan, I think.

I've had a place to stay since August.

Well, every "Sandler" is supposed to get a roof over his head after a couple of years.
Joe has a shed in his back yard and he has made a kind offer to Gustav.
Gus was sitting next to this preacher...
A pompous minister was seated next to a hillbilly on a flight across the country. After the plane was airborne, drink orders were taken.
The hillbilly asked for a whiskey and soda, which was brought and placed before him.
The flight attendant then asked the minister if he would like a drink.
"I'd rather be savagely raped by brazen whores," he replied in disgust, "than let liquor touch these lips."
"She-it, me too!" the hillbilly gasped, handing his drink back to the flight attendant. "I didn't know we had a choice."
Just a post to keep this on "top."
Really looking forward to May 6. Today, the mere thought of spending time in the company of intelligent people to whom I am not related sounds very comforting.
I should really start reading back through this thread for clues about hotels, etc. I think I will do that...just as soon as I have a little nap.
I must look at this, but the city breaks I've researched are not as cheap as I need; probably a small hotel with no stars is what I'm looking for! Or I remember the brilliant Motel 6 = $20 for a room for 2 adults and 2 kids, but that was 20 yrs ago.

So there are other than the already noted coming as well?
yes Walter there remains the possibility that I might appear.
<Since I don't have a map, I could perhapd need a guide when going southwards ...>
That would be too nice, dys!!!
Oh good! Dys is thinking about coming! Please talk Diane into coming with you. She doesn't have to come to the big gatherings if she is uncomfortable with that. I imagine there will be lots of smaller get-togethers for her to enjoy as well. Besides, I would love to see her and spend some time with her looking around Chicago. I've never been there before (except for flying thru O'Hare.)
Would Diane feel better about coming if Walter promises not to do any driving?
so where are most folks staying? i'd like to stay where a few others are. i, too, could read back, but i have a miserable flu, somebody please have mercy.
