CoastalRat,
You should even come without your makeup. (Besides, clown makeup scares my six year-old daughter.)

c.i.,
We hired a clown for her four year-old birthday party. She's been on medication ever since! Smile

On of my daughters was anxious about clowns to, wandel. They oftentimes used balloons and she was petrified of balloons popping. I'm sure Costal_Rat has seen it before.

I'm pretty sure Dys will come but I--hating to admit this--don't do well in large crowds. Anybody have any tranquilizers?

Yep, absolutely. A good number of children just don't like clowns. And that often does not change as they get older. I scared a couple of older teenagers to death last year at an outdoor event. They made eye contact with me, which is normally a good sign, but as I rushed toward them (in the way Prof BillyBob does) they screamed and ran. It was obvious from the way they screamed that they were not kidding around but were truly frightened of clowns. That's the only time I've ever misread someone.

I will attempt to scrub all the makeup off and come in my top secret cover identity of Wayne Aumen. And I assure you I will not scare anyone off that way.

I can't imagine you would ever intentionally scare anyone, CoastalRat. And I do know the difference between 'on' and 'one' and 'to' and 'too'.

Interesting info about children being scared of clowns. I guess we can't rely on personal observatins about things like this, even though my idea of clowns have always been positive - since childhood.

There's even an official name for clown phobia: coulrophobia.

Just noticed yitwail's signature and came right over. I'll do my best to make it! Goodness, it's only a 2 1/2 hr. drive or so for me, or a train ride or 1/2 hr. by plane, if I could afford it!!

devriesj, Your drive of 2.5 hours is your best bet; that 1.2 hr plane ride doesn't consider your trip to the airport and from the airport to downtown Chicago. Wink

Yeah, I know. I might take the train, though, if I can swing it. My sister lives in Chicago, so I could have her pick me up & stay with her or just take a cab.
I haven't read the whole thread. Have any plans for a place been firmed up?

As best I remember, that trip is actually just 30 minutes. Of course, I am not an American, so I use public transportation by default. Many Americans seem to think they can drive from the airport to downtown on a Friday afternoon. They find themselves parking on Kennedy Expressway rather than driving on it, as I could observe from my train.

Cool, devriesj!

As far as I know, where we are now is:

1.) Sublime's condo rec room looks like a very good plan B, to the point of maybe just going ahead and making it plan A. As far as I know, what we're waiting to find out from him is*:

-- How many people are allowed
-- Whether outside food is allowed
-- What the time limits are

(Anything else we would need to know?)

* I think he may have already answered some of these questions and I just forgot the answers.

If all of the answers to that seem to be encouraging, then I think the next step is to figure out how we'd handle the food situation at sublime's.

All of this while various folk are keeping an eye out for a really good restaurant-type place to meet. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do any research in that regard when I was there -- it was all scheduled to the max with a lot of rushing around.
