hi my name is rachael and im going to have my baby girl november 21st. I know what i want to name her but i don't know how to spell it. I want her name to be uh-lie-uh. I've looked all over the internet and keep thinking I am finding the correct way to spell it that would allow me to pronounce it the way i want to but it seems that every time i think i have figured it out i am wrong. in arabic alaia is a-lee-a meaning sublime. alaya as in alaya-vijnana which is the 6th level of consciousness in a buhdist religion and can also mean the "face you had before your parents were born" is either pronounced a-LAY-a or all-ya. In Greek alaia becomes agalaia and is pronounced ag-LAy-a meaning wisdom. In basque I think alaia is pronounced a-LAY-a meaning joy. there is also the alaia flower in china, a rice flower but i am pretty sure that is pronounced a-LAY-a. As far as i know i am correct with these pronunciations so far but if anyone is able to see that I am not please correct me.
I would really appreciate any help with finding the correct spelling for the way i would like to pronounce it and also if possible a meaning and origin for it as well.
thank you so very much.
I had a friend in Europe whose name was Aglaia (from the
Greek mythology) and actually means "splendor beauty"

(Mornin' Jane!) Hello Rachael, welcome to a2k.
I was just at Seattle's Pike Place Market where there is a shop called Uli's. Everyone knows to pronounce that "Ooo-Lee's".
I think spelling your favored name "Uhlia" would make it clear to most everyone -- it looks more interesting to me if you add a diacritical mark... ie. .... Uhli'a.
Pretty sounding name, btw. Care to explain how you came up with it?

Hm, maybe Rachael is talking about "Ulla" - that's a
German abreviation for "Ursula" or by now a name in
itself. Pronounciation is <Uhlllaa>
Walter's wife is called Ulla. Maybe he can enlighten us
more

a name for your daughter.... i think Alayah.. or Alaiyah or something would be the best... or Eliah (Eliyah?) but that would begin with an E sound as in Bell.. hmm and there is a russian name Uliyah or Yuliyah but thats a totally different name.. it starts with a YOO sound .. but i thought that thats what u were talking about at first. or u can just create a unique name with any spelling u want.. just so she'll be the only girl with that different name..
but thats so adorable.. you searched all that out just to find the perfect spelling for her name... is she due yet?
u should post a picture of her soon!!!!!!!!
we'd all love that!

Sorry, didn't see this waving earlier.
Ulla is more pronounced Oollaa.
(urs is an Ursula as well, but no 'Ulla' )

So is Utchi, which I love. Utchi, Utchka. You could get them all with Ursula - common nicknames, including Ulla.

what im thinkiing so far
i would like to thank everyone for their suggestions so far. I'm still not exactly sure what i'm going to do. What do you think about spelling it alaia and pronouncing it the way i want and just saying it is a variation. That maybe the only way to do this without going nuts .
Oh and i will definitely post a pic. of her as soon as she gets here.
thanks again.
