Mao's death 1940

I found a desk encyclopedia from 1941 that lists Mao Zedongs's year of birth as 1893 and his year of death as 1940. The entry is short so it doesn't go into details. Was there a period during the war when Mao was believed to be dead? Or is there some other explanation?

Any ideas?

Maybe it was just wishful thinking on the part of the writers. He died in 1976.

Thanks for the response.

I know he died in 1976. That's the whole point of my question.

Who was the publisher of the book, that might be important. large parts of China were occupied by the Japanese at the time and accurate information about the communist might not have been available and they might have been repeating Japanese propaganda.

That's bizzare, perhaps it was a different Mao, like a general or something? I've studied China quite a bit and have never come across or head or a reference like that!
