Anyone own/drive a Chrysler Crossfire?

I found the twin to this car, a 2004, 4,000 miles, 6-speed manual, for dirt cheap. I'm thinking of making an impulsive buy:

http://www.autabuy.com/photos/23941_66390522.jpg

It's practically brand new, under factory warranty, it's Mercedes powertrain/suspension, and they're supposedly awesome to drive.

Downfall: 2-seater, and 19-inch rear wheels/rear wheel drive = useless in snow.

Just wondering if anyone has driven them or owns one?

It's dirt cheap for a reason Slappy. Beware if you buy it as there could most likely be trouble down the road. The resale value of those cars is poor. If you do buy it, remember down the road that you bought it against doglover's advice. Cool

It's dirt cheap because it's an oddball car...they can't give them away new, so they depreciate fast. Still has great reliability ratings and gets excellent reviews all around. The market is very limited on 2-seat sport coupes(especially in New England) and they just don't sell a ton of them. Plus it's a stick, and most of the buyers of this particular car buy auto.

When I say "dirt cheap," I mean it's $2-3 grand less than what it should be, not 50% off or something ridiculous. Coupled with the very low miles and what they go for new, it's a steal.

I hear you on the beware, but the powertrain in that car is proven through Mercedes, as they've used it in their cars for years. It's Mercedes bread and butter powerplant.

If there's a major problem with the car, then shame on the dealership.

from "lemon-aid" :
----------------------------------------------------------

Chrysler Crossfire

Launched in June 2003 as a 2004 model, the Crossfire was panned by the Lemon-Aid New Car guide. Since then, it has been plagued by poor sales, forcing Chrysler to cut prices dramatically and pile on rebates.

Mercedes-Benz is fearful of losing its luxury cachet if it shares too many components with Chrysler products. That's why the Crossfire, with 39 percent of its parts derived from the Mercedes SLK (V6 engine, steering column and wheel, AC and heating systems, electronics and suspension), will likely be the last Chrysler to use so many German parts.
-----------------------------------------------------------
drivers complain about the high cost of regular maintenance, but i'd say that the crossfire being a merc, high cost for oilchanges and other routine maint are to be expected.
slappy, why are you concerned about winter driveability on rear-drive cars ? an aquaintentance has been driving mercedes cars for many years; he uses good winter tires and has never had a problem - i'm sure you know eastern ontario gets plenty of snow, sleet and other goodies. i have found out that even on my front-wheel drive olds intrigue i can't do without winter tires.
just think of all the fun you'll have with the car come spring ... zoom ! hbg

i'm sure slappy just wants a crossfire to impress the ladies . can't you see him cruising , leather gloves, one hand on the steering wheel, waiving lazily with the other hand as he passes mere mortals ? hbg

I sat in one only. Im now about 6' and I found it a bit confining but not snug like a jag.

Yetserdays Lancaster New Era had an article that US drive train cars are now much better than European , especially german cars which are quite overrated (this was JC Powers).

Hey, dont shoot at the messenger , Ill shoot back .

For winter driving , a hint, use chains and fender guards. The3 car has a retro look anyway

SDH, i looked it up & see it has Stability Control, so as long as that's turned on, it should be ok in snow, if you drive conservatively.

Slappy's gonna go for the land speed record on a "snow based surface"

I like the looks of that "Nomad wannabe" station wagon the "Magnum" (?). They put a 350 hemispherical head twin turbo in that .

"Hey ma, Im goin grocery shoppin!!"

Hamburger and yitwail...I've owned rear wheel drive cars, it's not really that I see as a problem. It's the tires. The car has 19 inch rear wheels with 255 tires, very wide. They're all-seasons, but it'll slide all over. My BMW was awful after I put performance tires on. Traction control only helps correct the car if the ass slides out...doesn't actually give you more traction, just cuts power when the tires spin.

Farmerman, my dad actually has the Magnum, with the Hemi. Really nice car, that's shares the platform with the Mercedes E-class I think.

Huh, I don't really see this car as one that will impress chicks. My last BMW was a pretty pimpin' car, and it didn't do much in that department. Can't drive your car through a bar.

Anyway, it's sitting outside, picked it up today. Too bad it's F'N SNOWING and I can't go drive it like an a$$hole and total it taking an off-ramp at 80.

put it in the garage.
The only Chrysler car I dont like is the 300, it looks too much like a tank. It needs classier lines.

Haha...garage.

I live in a city, the driveway at my house is owned by the condo upstairs. Street parking, baby. Not ideal, but what you gonna do. My friend who lives under me just bought an Infiniti G35 too. Hopefully our cars don't get banged up. So far parking isn't bad though.

My motorcycle goes in a garage though, at least.

I actually really like the looks of the 300C. At least an American car company came out with a original & attractive sedan design for once.

well, I must part company with your opinion on that, even though I usually agree with your twisted logic. The meds must be working, at last.

slappy : i see that you may have a problem getting winter-tires. the on-line sites all seem to draw a blank.
two suggestions (for whatever they're worth) :
-contact a mercedes dealer and ask if they have any 225/19 winter tires,
-see a tire specialist to find out if you can shod your car with different but acceptable size winter tires; the toronto star newspaper car guru often recommendends different size tires for unusual cars - i don't understand how this works, but apparently it's a matter of some calculation of size/width/whatever; could be worth a try,
-a bonus suggestion : have you checked the tire dealer ads in various car magazines ? call to an 800 number may be of help ?
-another bonus suggestion : try the car guys on NPR; they are on the air every saturday morning - listenened to them this morning.

lucky you, getting all the free advice that is completely useless !
HAPPY TOBAGONNING ! hbg
