Quote:Fort Collins (Colorado) resident Rosemary Kramer had no reason to doubt that the woman on the phone was from Larimer County Courts.
She sounded official when she asked whether Kramer's son had received a jury duty packet, and she even identified Kramer's address.
Then the caller said she needed personal information about Kramer's son so he could serve jury duty and receive 95 percent of his salary while he was doing it.
Kramer is one of dozens of people across the country who have received calls about jury duty, in a ploy by identity thiefs to collect people's personal information.
Callers posing as officials from county offices are hoping residents will give out their Social Security numbers or other personal information that will help thieves steal their identities.
Currently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the crime, which is taking place across the country.
The FBI does not know who the callers are, but many identity theft scams of this magnitude are organized by a group of people outside of the country, said Read.
"They get people from inside the country working for them," she said. "They'll pay to have a little telemarketing center make the calls."
whoa - scary
What site did you pick this up from Dys?
This is really something I'd like to refer to.
Thanks for the warning there.
All you have to do is tell them your name is Fred, from Hoboken, and feed a false SS #.
