I need some help translating something into Japanese.

Eight Guardians

or something to that effect. Preferably something with the smallest number of syllables possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I asked for this from an exchange student and have copied his reply to me verbatum i hope it is helpfull
I think the "lit" means a literal translation the questionmarks are probably japanee characters that wont translate properly to english text.

I'm gonna venture a guess on this. Try 八人の後見 = はちにんのこうけん = hachi-nin no kouken = lit. "eight people who are guardians"
There are three words in my dictionaries that are translated as "guardian", but I think kouken fit the bill best. Kouken, as a term, usually refers to someone who helps you, supports you, and defends you, but who still lets you be the center of attention. It's usually used to describe kabuki stagehands, but I after a bit of research, I can't find any reason why it can't refer to any sort of guardian. You may want to get a Japanese native to look over that to make sure it captures the proper subtlety.

後見 fits this definition of "guardian"

Law One who is legally responsible for the care and management of the person or property of an incompetent or a minor.

so, it is really hard to say out of context

うしろだてとなって面倒をみること。特に、幼少の者の代理となって補佐すること。また、その人。うしろみ。
「甥(おい)を―する」

(2)能・舞踊・歌舞伎などの舞台で、演技者の後ろに控えていて手助けをする者。

(3)政務を補佐する役。鎌倉幕府の執権・連署、室町幕府の管領など。

(4)〔法〕 親権者のいない未成年者、および禁治産者を補佐・保護し、その財産を管理すること。また、その制度。
