i was wondering, (but have to go check my pot, brb), ok back, i was wondering, since the first stanza of an Ode is called a STROPHE and the second stanza is called an antiSTROPHE, would the Greek meaning of STROPHE, "to turn", have any bearing on the word we use for the symbol " ' " which we call an apoSTROPHE.
well, anyway, thanks
Dear Ownage,
You are correct. «Apostrophe» is «turning aside».
You may find two meanings of «apostrophe» in Greek. It may mean, first, an address of an orator to one person in the audience. The orator turns aside to address the one person. It may mean also the mark of punctuation. It is the mark of «omission».
Kind regards,
Goldmund
