Indiana Considers Ban on Lesbian Pregancies!!!

I can't believe this, are we still living in the US of A?

Quote:
(Indianapolis, Indiana) Legislation has been introduced in the Indiana legislature that would prohibit gays, lesbians and single people in Indiana from using medical science to assist them in having a child.

The bill has the support of Senator Patricia Miller, the chair of the Health Finance Commission where the legislation is currently being considered.

Miller says that assisted pregnancy is totally unregulated. The bill would bar any doctor from assisting in a pregnancy through intrauterine insemination, donation of an egg, donation of an embryo, in vitro fertilization and transfer of an embryo, and sperm injection without making a number of "determinations" about the "suitability of the candidate.

Women seeking treatment would have to provide a certificate of satisfactory completion of an assessment required under the bill.

Among the determining factors is a requirement that the women be married to a person of the opposite sex. The assessment would contain a description of the family lifestyle and automatically exclude lesbians. Women would also have to provide proof that they have participated in faith-based or church activities.

A judge could not establish parentage of a child born through assisted reproduction without the assessment certificate and a separate certificate from the physician involved.

Courts would be prohibited from granting a petition to establish parentage if the parents have been convicted of crimes such as murder, reckless homicide neglect of a dependent felony battery, or have a drug conviction.

Planned Parenthood of Indiana president Betty Cockrum calls it chilling and government intrusion on a person's private life.

The Health Finance Commission will vote October 20th on whether to recommend the legislation to the full General Assembly.

Another way to look at this, is to hold it up to the public eye and under their (our) scrutiny the clearness of the insanity would emerge. People would realize the wrongful nature of such restriction and in turn boot lunatics such as Miller out of office. If people pay attention to the long term consequences of such legislation, they will also come to realize what other freedoms may be in jeopardy. Today it is lesbian pregnancy, tomorrow it may be pregnancy by anyone over 35 and the day after that for any couple with less than 3 living relatives. Where does it end?

Gosh Chrissee, can it be that the two of us agree on something? This might ever be the 2nd time we have agreed. Wow.

This definately steps beyond what government has a right to do. I don't think this would ever hold up even if they managed to pass it.

This would never be able to pass not only because doctors are not capable of determining who is suitable or not, but this statement alone makes such a ban illegal..."Women would also have to provide proof that they have participated in faith-based or church activities. " There is separation of church and state in our constitution.

umm, shouldn't even do that, it only encourages them.

is it really any surprise that they're tryin' this one on ?

first they tell you you're gonna have a baby whether or not you want to. they tell you that you have to live in agony and despair as your body rots from your bones. they tell you that you WILL pledge loyalty to their god. they tell you not only who you can have sex with, but what kind of sex you may engage in. they tell you that they don't want activist judges, but are goin' batshit because a nominee can't be verified as a anti-abortion activist.

enuff is enuff. time to put boot to ass with these jerks.

Okay kids, civics lesson on the role of the federal government. Pay attention.

Which are the duties of the federal government?

1) Keep the highways and bridges fixed

2) Defend against invasion

3) Stay the hell out of everything else

4) All of the above

Indiana Bill To Ban Lesbian Pregnancies Dropped

Quote:
(Indianapolis, Indiana) A proposed bill that would prohibit gays, lesbians and single people in Indiana from using medical science to assist them in having a child has been dropped by its legislative sponsor.

State Sen. Patricia Miller, R-Indianapolis, issued a one-sentence statement late Wednesday about her decision to drop the proposal.

"The issue has become more complex than anticipated and will be withdrawn from consideration by the Health Finance Commission," she said.

More complex than anticipated? Has this woman ever heard of the Constitution?

Reminds me of the guy that introduced a bill in favor of gay marriage so that he could go on record as opposing it....

This is the sort of story that can be plucked from the daily activities of either side of the political spectrum. I confess that I get a kick out of some of the preposterous antics of Lefty kooks, and so far be it from me to begrudge my Liberal friends their opportunity for a few yucks at the expense of a Rightie kook.

I do find the sort of outrage and calamitous cries that accompany these single instances of scornful, but essentially harmless partisan politics to be over the top and amusing in their own way. In the short length of this thread we were advised of the preposed preposterous bill, and its withdrawal before it was even seriously discussed or considered by the legislative body involved. It was rightly pointed out that it was likely a move by a politician to drum up support within a narrow fringe of voters, and never intended to be legislatively advanced. Unfortunate, but it happens all the time on both sides of the aisle.

It seems to me what is most telling about these sorts of stories is the degree to which one side or the other attempts to defend or at least mitigate the harsh impact of one of these kook's comments or efforts.

Baloney. This bill is not so very different from laws which have existed on the books only a few years ago.

Harmless? Less than two years ago, the Supreme Court of the United States had to strike down a law in Texas prohibiting sodomy. Conservative websites like World Net Daily were hollering against the Supreme coourt for striking it down. This law in Indiana is in the exact same vein as the Texas law which existed less than two years ago.

Don't say this law was harmless. This bill was completely consistent with the intentions of the Religious Right for this country.

You're right KW. The Right is verrrry baaad, and the Left is verrry gooood.

But for the record, it wasn't a law it was a bill, and as such was, in fact, harmless.
