It's been covered by many artists, including Ray Charles, but I don't know who originally wrote it. (I hate that the lyrics sites don't give credit to the authors/lyricists) In the back of my mind, there's a niggling little voice that says it was originally French...

Y'know, you're making a convert out of me. I used to say that I was a prose person, thought poetry was artificially contrived words and because of that was somehow false ... that the words & the metre were more important than the emotion or truth. Then I started reading your thread ...
