I dreamt I was
In Hiroshima

I dreamt I was
In Hiroshima
This biblical sun
A nuclear goddess of treason
Coated in a sandstorm
Of radioactive dust
Here in Iraq
Nothing has a reason
A crippled tree
Stands alone
But I dreamt that this
Was Hiroshima
And I couldn't find
My way home

A couple of verses of Imagine seem appropriate at this point!

Cold Turkey

Magnify the fiery eye
The zombies are marching again
Out on the lonely, country road
Where the first line of lights begin
Bottles wait
Full of the bait
Locked behind closed bars
But why open old wounds?
Old scars?

Out on the lonely, desert road
Where the sun can eat your brain
You crawl through the dirt like a baby
And lick your lips for rain

Out in the shimmer of madness
Watching your shadow shrink
A five word mantra fills your head
God, I need a drink

Look What They Did

Look what they did to our dream, mama
Look what they did to our dream
Sometimes I want to scream, mama
Sometimes I just want to scream
They took away our vision
And replaced it with their own
They're still worshipping money…
Can I come home?

All I want to do is drink, mama
All I want to do is drink
I don't know what to think, mama
I don't know what to think
I watch the good ones vanish
I'll soon be here alone
They're still worshipping killers
Can I come home?

They've got no heart or soul, mama
They've got no heart or soul
All their hopes grow old, mama
All their hopes grow old
The weak are meek - the powerful mad
Their lunacy has grown
They're still worshipping bombs
Can I come home?

All I want to do is drink, mama
All I want to do is drink
I don't know what to think, mama
I don't know what to think
I watch the good ones vanish
I'll soon be here alone
They're still worshipping Hitler
Can I come home?

Two quite stunning poems, Endy.
I think the last one would be terrific as a song. I can almost hear it.

(And hey, hang in there, mate! This is a good time for lots of heavy duty walking - my solution to just about everything!)

Loss

I don't understand anymore
Although I've tried
It seems theres only more pain
On the otherside
You care for someone
Suddenly they're gone
And another empty space
As time goes on
And all through your life it is that way
You watch them leave
Suddenly one day
And even though you love them
And love their unique ways
You watch them vanish from your life
Because you don't know what to say

I'll try not to worry, alright?

In the meantime, you continue writing, OK?

Peace to you, Endy,

Olga

The Realization

You see, I felt it
Like a vibration
Like a whisper, a nudge
Or sudden vision
Mind invasion
A realization (that life can always get crazier)
But when I saw it coming towards us
My brain told me that cannot be real
Suddenly I didn't understand the world at all
As I stood there squinting into the sun
And it surged towards us
"RUN!!"
But I didn't run
I felt no urge to turn away
I stood and watched the final few seconds
Un-play as if in a dream
And when I felt the first wave of heat
I began to scream
Before its shadow rolled over me
Blowing me off my feet
Before the buildings behind me erupted
Into the street
He who had screamed "Run!!" lay dead
Another held his shattered head
I could not speak
I could not stand up on my feet
I was dripping crimson
And my best friend was dead
His screaming, "Run!!" still echoes in my head

Giant

His heart is a black stone
He is sinew and bone
Muscle slabs of dynamite
Hands for crushing out life
A myopic brain
Tirelessly focused on the game
The earth leaps beneath his stride
He is a killer
Cold
Numbed deep inside
He is unafraid
Beating out his rage
Burning down his enemies
With hate
His message a splitting earthquake
His battle-cry oblivion
As he releases the nuclear
Arrogance of his minions
Destruction Destruction
He glorifies the killing
And stands as a hero
In the eyes of the willing
But his heart is old, evil, cruel
He's full of ignorance
The giant is a fool

It's been covered by many artists, including Ray Charles, but I don't know who originally wrote it. (I hate that the lyrics sites don't give credit to the authors/lyricists) In the back of my mind, there's a niggling little voice that says it was originally French...

Endy -- great stuff -- really appreciate Cold Turkey -- substitute cigarettes (or other substances at different times in my life) for booze and that's me, but over and above the personal, I think it's great in itself.

Y'know, you're making a convert out of me. I used to say that I was a prose person, thought poetry was artificially contrived words and because of that was somehow false ... that the words & the metre were more important than the emotion or truth. Then I started reading your thread ...
