'Transformers 3' filming to transform Michigan Avenue
(By Luis Arroyave, The Chicago Tribune, July 16, 2010)

Get ready for your close-up, Magnificent Mile.

Director Michael Bay is coming to Michigan Avenue to film "Transformers 3" Friday through Sunday. And besides his camera crew, some of whom will be filming from our very own Tribune Tower, Bay is bringing helicopters, skydivers and fireballs (that's right, fireballs) to the busy downtown street.

Where exactly will the magic happen?

Right around the Michigan Avenue Bridge and Pioneer Court (401 N. Michigan Ave.) area. Michigan Avenue between Ontario Street and Wacker Drive was to be closed at 8 p.m. Thursday for filming and to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday. Lower Michigan Avenue between Hubbard Street and Lower Wacker Drive closes at 8 p.m. Friday and opens at 5 a.m. Monday. The street closures will reroute 22 CTA buses (go to transitchicago.com for more details).

The helicopters and noisy effects — fireballs, gunfire, explosions — will be shot Saturday and Sunday after 8 a.m.

Skydiver stunts will take place sometime between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. on those two days and will periodically close Hubbard between Clark and State streets; Kinzie Street between Clark and State; Dearborn Street between Wacker and Hubbard; State between Wacker and Hubbard; and Wabash Avenue between Wacker and Kinzie.

Chicago Film Office Director Rich Moskal, who feels crowds weren't too big or too small during last weekend's shoot on LaSalle Street, said he isn't sure how much onlookers will be able to see this weekend.

After the production crew wraps up on Michigan, they'll set up on nearby Wacker. Wacker between Michigan and Wabash will close at 9 p.m. Sunday and open at 5 a.m. Thursday.

@wandeljw,
If the Hancock building doesn't turn into a fire-breathing robot, I'm going to be disappointed.

Someone working in the Tribune building has already posted home video of the filming on Michigan Avenue.

@wandeljw,
My brother called me a few hours ago from the NBC Tower where he works. Didn't leave a message. I'm sure this is what his call was about.

@eoe,
That makes sense. The NBC tower is in the same vicinity.

(I myself am just about four blocks from there.)

@wandeljw,
Brother probably watched it from his 14th floor window.

There are cars and debris piled up on the Michigan Avenue bridge right now for the Transformers 3 filming this weekend.

@wandeljw,
Spoke with my brother last night. He's head of security at NBC so he's been involved, to a degree, with this filming. Some if their site is being utilized for film crew parking and equipment storage as well as The Tribune Tower. He says that someone(s) is supposed to leap off of Trump Tower today? He loves this kind of stuff, even at 60 yrs. old, so he's in seventh heaven.

@wandeljw,
Wonder what effect Megan Fox's absence will have on Transformers 3?

It is about time other than New York City got pummeled. Mr. Green 2 Cents

Rahm Emanuel is stalking me. Last night, when I was leaving work, he was at the train station shaking hands. This morning at a completely different train station, I walked into him again. Chicago is great when there is a campaign going on.

@wandeljw,
I got a call from the Emanuel campaign yesterday. Looks like the guy has some serious cash and is not afraid to spend it early in the campaign.

Rahm: Hello, I'm Rahm Emmanuel.

My friend Kim: This is so surreal.

Rahm: No it isn't.

I have a large family. I can give this hoodie away if I get the NFC Champions or Super Bowl Champions hoodies. Smile
