I started a separate thread on the wildlife forum for this, but thought I'd plunk it in here for the locals. ugh!

The emergence began yesterday in Lake County, IL. There are hundreds more today. I expect thousands more soon. Last night's new reports told of people shoveling their driveways with snow shovels to remove the shells and dead males with counts in the billions (with a b)! The forester also indicated that the noise level will become so loud that two people standing four feet apart will not be able to hear each other speak without shouting as loudly as they can.

I don't hear any singing yet, but these are ugly, ugly looking creatures.

I envy you, JB. I've always wanted to be involved in a locust invasion.

not locusts... I remember the last cicada invasion. It was pretty wild. My MIL and FIL returned home from a long vacation and had to shovel out their fireplace in order to remove a foot-deep layer of bugs. Seems they'd left their flue open.

Quote:
Cicadas may give away their pending emergence by building thousands of "chimneys" or "stovepipes" on the ground, especially near trees. They will emerge through these structures when they leave the ground and crawl up trees and shrubs.

If the number of "chimneys" I have is a good predictor then I'm going to have a lot of bugs. No need to do a core aeration of the yard this year.

I believe cicadas are locusts, but I could be wrong.

Ok, I was wrong, but at least I didn't think cows ate rats.

no, but crows eat rabbits.

and rabbits scream loudly when scooped up by a crow.

"They're really cool to watch," said Notebaert's curator of biology Doug Taron. "They have these bright red eyes. And you can eat them."

May you can eat them, Doug. I'll pass, thanks.

It looks like I'll be coming downtown next Wednesday (5/30). CI -- do you have any plans for Wednesday yet? If not, I could come down early enough to meet for lunch and then join you in some sort of adventure during the afternoon. I'll be meeting up with Mr B somewhere in the loop around 4:00 and, if lunch doesn't work out, maybe we could do something for dinner.

I'm wide open on Wednesday, May 30, so I'm probably a lot more flex than you. Just tell me when and where; I'll be there.

Ok, let me get more info from Mr B and also see if there are other locals who want to meet for lunch.

JW, joe, gargamel?

or does dinner work better for anyone (I know lunch is better for JW)?

Walter, I'm afraid my memory isn't what it used to be.

She never did - always forgot what she promised ... wasn't it at the registry office?

I'm staying at the Belden Stratford, and their phone number is (773) 281-2900. I'm also bringing my cell, but I'll share my number when I see you.

Or just get it off the bathroom wall at the Duke under the words "For a good time, call Tak".

Funny. My best friends' mother lived at the Belden-Stratford for many years. Apt. 1219.
