Walter,

This morning I took my winter coat and my 7 year old daughter's winter coat out of storage. Every morning I go with her to wait for her school bus.

I promise not to show our temperatures nor post photos I took this afternoon in the park.

But it was cold and sunny here: only 54°F today vs 70°F on Monday

Same here. 80 during the day, in the 50's and 60's at night. But the temp is dropping tonight and by tomorrow night, I'll have to bring my plants back inside. One night wouldn't be so bad but we're going to be near freezing for the next four nights! What a bait and switch.

The quarterly meeting of Chicago A2Kers was held at noon today. Four members were present. JPB was again reelected President of the Chicago Chapter.

Topic for the next meeting: I want to be admitted as "corresponding member".

This would indeed require another meeting. If your proposal is approved, I will be required to send you copies of the "minutes" for each meeting, Walter.

(JPB chose me as secretary because I have the nicest legs.)

A summary of the minutes would do, wandel.

I mean, if I would get accepted, I certainly would be pleased (co-)sponsor a meeting in early June or on Mai 31 for instance

As an aside, wandel: shall I make some photos when I'm the next time in Cologne?

2. The mess on the CTA: Another world-shifting event is the construction nightmare on the Chicago Transit Authority el lines. The CTA's red, brown, and purple lines are going from four tracks to three tracks on the north side, which will severely affect rush hour commutes, especially in the evenings. As a purple line rider, this is not happy news. So far, the morning rush hour wasn't too bad, but I dread the evening commute.

The CTA made a big deal about delaying the construction work so that it could hear suggestions from the public. It held several open forums and collected all sorts of alternatives. And then it went ahead with what it had been planning all along. So far, I haven't seen one thing that wasn't already in the CTA's blueprints for the project months ago. If it is going to be a disaster, it will have been a well-planned disaster.

joe, I meant to ask you about this at lunch today, but it completely slipped my mind. I saw in the media that the first day was no big deal but I haven't heard anything since. How's your commute going?

Gargamel, are you affected by this too?

It hasn't been bad so far. In fact, I haven't noticed a difference. Train capacity in the mornings is only supposed to decrease by 30%, and as far north as I get on, there's always plenty of room to begin with.

I have been rerouting in the evenings though.

Knowing the CTA, it will get worse. It will suck beyond belief. The good news is, my cousin is giving me her bike, which I will ride each morning to the nearest METRA station! This will actually cut my normal commute in half!

Oh, that's very cool! Will you have a longer walk getting to work from Union Station or Ogilvie Station than from your CTA stop in the loop?

That reminds me... I was waiting for joe in the lobby of his building today and a guy from one of those bike messenger services came out of the elevator and left to get back on his bike. He was bundled up to the hilt, but I can't imagine having that job in weather like today's.

Riding a bike produces a lot of heat. When bundled and riding uphill can be sweaty. I used to ride my bicycle thru winter and it doesn't feel that cold when riding as you are occupied and generating heat.

I agree with you about generating heat, talk (well, except the going up hill part - this is Chicago), but with temps in the low 30s today and wind chills even lower, it's not a job I would want.

For those in the loop -- do these guys work throughout the winter? Nuh uh, no thanks.

That would be excellent for me, Walter. For others on A2K, they can see how beautiful the city is and the Rhine River, as well. (There are not nearly enough photos of Cologne on A2K.)
