Laughing We know you'll be with us in spirit too, Thomas.

I've added SIL and BIL to the dinner reservation (I think Mr B was feeling overwhelmed by being the only non-A2Ker). They are not planning on staying for SL because, just like everyone else I know, it's past their bedtime. What's wrong with these people???? The friends who backed out previously are not coming. Gargamel is using one of the extra tickets and we still have one left if anyone wants to bring a friend. Or, we can try to talk SIL and BIL into staying and purchase one additional ticket at the door (assuming it isn't sold out). XRT is sponsering the show and has started playing SL tracks, but I think it's more likely that Saturday's show will sell out.

It is rather odd that a Westphalian family is running a Bavarian restaurant. Maybe the concept of a Westphalian restaurant didn't appeal to the American palate.

We Westphalian restaurants are better known in e.g. Missouri and Texas than in Chicago, I fear:

Quote:
Westphalia is the oldest German Catholic community west of the Mississippi River
(The church there was founded by some distant relative of me)

A bit about Muenster/Texas:
Quote:
Tourism is prospering here because of our German pride. People visit our town just to sample the ethnic food we're famous for. Our award-winning meat markets produce some of the best authentic German sausages you'll ever eat. The backerei, or bakery, offers mouth-watering strudels and other delectable goodies. This is the town where schnitzel, bratwurst and kraut are the staples of our diets.

One of the best advantages about living here is that we are a hard-working, close-knit town whose people practice the traditional values of honesty and respect. Located about an hour and 10 minutes from the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, we're close enough to access busy city life, but far enough away to avoid urban crime.

mrs h's mother - who came from eastern-prussia - was also quite active in the kitchen .
the dining room 'tables' were filled with plenty of food - i think it was what is now called ' a groaning board ' .
the mennonite saying : "ess , ess, mein kind " certainly applied here .

ps don't recall where "frau glunz' came from - just a good neighbour of the in-laws .

I like that story. Thanks, hbg. I'm sure none of us will leave hungry from the looks of the menu.

9:00 is good; give me a call when you're close and I'll let you know where we are. If we aren't already at Martyr's we'll only be a few blocks away.

BIL is sick and probably won't join us. SIL might be convinced to stay later.

JPB, The link was supposed to direct you to a party in Chicago on trying to win the olympics. Sorry, but I can't remember anything else.

I've been fine, and will be on the road again on Friday on a 15-day tour to Israel. My wife, younger son, and I visited DC for seven days last month. We stayed at the Marriott at the Georgetown University campus, and really got to know more about Georgetown - as a pleasant place with many good restaurants.

Thanks for the welcome back. Wink

I stayed at the same hotel for the 4th of July bicentennial celebrations in DC in 1976. We walked EVERYWHERE! I'm trying to remember the restaurant that's famous for their biscuits, hmmm..... dunno now, but I brought biscuit mix back to Vt with me.

Glad to hear you've been enjoying yourself, CI.

When I took my seven year old daughter to the bus stop earlier this morning, she was disappointed that the snow hadn't arrived already. Yesterday her teacher promised the class that today they would be able to play in the snow. Now it looks like her teacher was correct.

It looks rather cold for tomorrow as well (and temperatures will become modestly higher over the weekend):
