Researching S.S. troop lists

recently i found out that a brother of my grandfather (who married a german woman) ended up fighting on the eastern front with the Wermeract.. he was decorated for bravery and somehow ended up in an S.S. unit.. is there anyway i could find out if this was true and how i could find his name and what division he was in.. he spent 12 years or more in russia and is mad today.. help would be appreciated..
