And I'd better get a move on to pick up my children. They've had to be kept busy for the office's benefit, too.

What does -They've had to be kept busy for the office's benefit- mean?

Loosely translated it would mean that the office benefits when they (the children) are kept busy. Essentially this is a matter of keeping them out of the office workers way, so the accountants, sales persons, secretaries and the such can do their jobs without children running around screaming. At least that is my take on it.
